When you guys received your blackberrys, did you switch your number to the provided phone or did you receive a new number and kept your original phone for personal use?

Short answer: No texting on Blackberries and everything can be monitored by the firm... On the plus side, no cell phone bill (~$600-$700 in annual savings, at minimum).
I don't know many that switched.
I know people that have done
I know people that have done both. Some transfer their old number onto their BB, some get a new number and have two devices. I'm doing the two device thing now, and it's really a bitch. A pocket is big enough for one cell phone, not two. I'm thinking of ditching the phone and using only my BB, despite lack of texting. Most people I talk with regularly have BBs, and thus BB Messenger, which is better than text.
I just hate having two phones.
