BlackRock drug test?
Hey guys,
Does anyone here have any recent employment experience with BlackRock? On their job application, it says you have to take a drug test within 72 hours of an offer, which seems a bit Gestapo-esque to me. Is this true?
Not that I have anything to worry about in terms of drugs, but a pre-employment demand like that may be indicative of the firm's overall culture, which I don't think is a good thing. It seems like a fundamental mistrust of employees.
Anyway, anyone here have any general BlackRock experience, and if so, is this true?
I don't have specific experience with BlackRock, but the 72-hour time period after the offer is made is pretty standard. Every offer I have ever gotten, with one exception, has required me to take the drug test within 72 hours of getting the verbal offer.
Every other BB I know of gives you a very large time frame before you start (i.e. no more than 30 days but no less than 5 before you start).
They make you take a drug test even if you haven't accepted the offer? What if you need time to decide between offers?
^this is also what I have heard
BB is no more than 30 no less than 7 in the US....very standard
yup. 72 hour drug test is standard for most companies. bb's expect you to go through a massive cleanse / rehab program in a very short amount of time which is why they give you a few weeks to get ur drug test completed.
My friend recently tried asking HR to add an extra day or two to the deadline and was denied. They're strict about it, at least they were for him.
Jesus.
I just can't get over the fact that they make you piss in a cup before you even accept the offer.
No this is not common at all, they think your a stoner. Everyone else is right
30, 5
I have experience with BlackRock. Upon arrival to the office before the first day, they handed me a map to a nearby clinic and some documentations I needed to fill out for the drug test. They wanted me to do the test on that day. I went straight to the clinic on the day and after couple of days, I cleared my drug test.
It's standard, don't worry about it.
Clear it and begin your job.
Here is a hint. Lay off the weed during recruiting season. Jeez, if you are going to do drugs at least do blow. That is gone from your system pretty fast. Rookies.
How long after taking your drug test did you hear from BlackRock?
@mannymanny @matterwatter did find out/describe the type of drug test that you found out BlackRock to do?
Surprise full cavity searches are part of the firm's culture, if you are into that sort of thing.

Hair test
is this still the case? are you certain?
When was the last time you got a haircut? BlackRock is one of the only firms that does hair tests nowadays. Since they handle so much money they have faced outside pressure from clients to employ stricter tests.
Realistically you'll have the standard 5 Panel Drug Test http://www.5-panel-drug-test.com/

The last time that I cut my hair was last weekend. Why?
Oh BlackRock... they're known for the big one. They make you take a hair test and a piss test, and if you're in a front office roll they even make you take a blood test. They check for everything. A friend of mine actually was informed by HR after his test that not only did he have an unnaturally high level of alprazolam (Xanax) in his system, he was also HIV positive. Thank god for BlackRock, they caught it early.
/troll
i heard they stick a q-tip up your weiner too
...
WAS IT WORTH IT CAROL WAS IT
College buddy of mine landed a dream offer at a top-tier consulting firm and is asked to take a hair follicle test within 2 days. So he goes into the testing facility and waits in a room for the test. The doctor comes in, looks at his shaved head, arms, and hands, and then says remove your shirt for a sample from your armpit. He takes off his shirt and raises his arm, clean like his prepubescent years. Doctor says roll up your pants to your knee. Nothing. At this point, my friend thinks he's at the home stretch and all he needs to do is just piss in a cup, which is fine since he passed a take-home self-test. Then the doctor says stand up and remove your pants. Bent over with the doctor looking for any hair on his ass, he says "so... I think you know what's going on here. I've just landed an offer for my dream job that will change my life".
We laugh about this story every time he's in town for a business trip.
So I guess he shaved his eye-brows too huh.
have you had any poppy seed bagels recently? if so, you'll definitely test positive for cocaine
edit: old post, won't contibute to the nonsense
IM FREAKIN OUT MAN
@BlackHat @Determined @analyst-therapist what exactly are all of your sources to directly imply that BlackRock uses the hair test? Unless you have first hand experience yourselves why should we believe that? Care to provide some real facts and credentials on the manner?
i see you're new to the internet.
Does anyone have experience with BlackRock's hair test? I'd assume a urine test but I would love to have someone confirm a hair test if possible!!!
I have a test from hireright coming up for an internship this summer, can any of you tell me whether it'll be a hair or a urine test for sure? I'd really appreciate it
I swear some people on here are literally too stupid to insult. They do an industry standard 5 panel drug test (urine). For the most part hair tests are used by the government and any companies that deal with government contracts.

Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster. Does anyone have specifics on BlackRock's drug testing policy? Do they require a test to all employees, and if so, is it a hair test, urine test, etc?? Thank you so much for your help!!
Hair test, unless they've changed in the last 3 months. BlackRock is thorough as hell, pretty sure all employees are required (all of the front office and risk guys definitely)
do you know if this is still the case? or if its now only urine?
Shave your head asap.
eyebrows and eye lashes as well
thanks for the responses--Wow, even for junior level roles? Does anyone know how long thc lasts in hair???
3+months
Hair test won't show immediate use like a urine test will (it takes 7-10 days for proteins in the hair follicle to develop).
As for how long it stays.. that's just a function of how long your hair is. Could be weeks, could be years.
I have never heard of any banks giving hair tests. Are you all joking?
my friend had is offer taken back after the hair test at a BB i'd recommend you at least shave head/eyebrows
Any current/former Blk-Rock'ers out there that can confirm the hair test??? Im sure there is a urine test at least....
A friend of mine told me he had a hair test, he's in London.
To be honest, what does it matter? None of those over-the-counter detox things work, according to a pharmacist friend. If you used, it's just a roll of the dice. You shouldn't worry about things that you have no control over. Best of luck.
On a side note, I wonder how many job offers have been cancelled over a drug that will eventually be legal.
thanks for the info...any other blackrockers out there???
my boy went into PMG FI. Now in his 2nd year. had a urine test the winter/spring before he started if memory serves.
but yea, shave your eyebrows/back hair/puebes just in case
haha, thanks....urine test I am good to go! It's the hair test I'm worried about!!!
Yo eded - I think these guys are just pulling your leg. SF or NYC?
SF. Do you have any info ? Thanks--
I don't have any specific info but never heard of a hair test, I worked at BLK before and I didn't have any tests done (foreign office) - may I ask what the position is (is it PMG on the iShares side to be specific?), I interviewed recently for the SF office as well - waiting to hear back from HR.
good luck, keep me posted on how it goes! how long ago did you work there? it's for Ishares.. there was a statement about a drug screening on the app so im guessing they do but im not sure....
I worked there until slightly more than a year ago. Seems like offers went out to a few people on WSO today (you're not the only one asking about the drug test) - now I'm getting nervous. Did you get a written offer already? I did get one call after the interviews saying they were positive and we discussed various logistics such as possible start dates and relo bonus expectations - did you have a similar experience? The whole process is getting really drawn out.
they didnt test you at all when you were hired? Similar experience, no offer yet for me....I wonder if there are any existing/recently hired BLK'rs that can comment on the testing out there??
I came in through a merger - also I don't think drug tests are legal in the country I'm in so I wasn't tested at all. Not sure for the States but a hair tests seems to be a bit too much (even Goldman only does the urine test back when I was in UG) - I was in contact with someone who worked in the states to talk about the interview process but didn't ask him about their testing (I am totally clean so it didn't enter my mind to ask) - I think i'd be awkward to ask now. I'll try to ask around in a discrete way if possible (It might be hard to do now as they might suspect its me that's worried).
makes sense. if you can ask that would be appreciated! Tell them its your buddy who's interviewing
Piss test
Is this for summer analyst or full time offers? any info on whether they test summers/ do they test 72 hours after offer or closer to start date of internship?
Curious about whether it is a 72 hour thing upon offer or a test that just needs to be done before start day. Any update, eded or dgiroux48?
Can anyone please confirm whether it'll be a urine or hair test? I have one coming up for a summer internship position and it'll be carried out by hireright and labcorp. Please let me know!
Did you ever find out? I'm looking at them too.
Why is everyone so scared of a drug test? Is everyone here blazing up everyday lol
.
Even if you shave everything they can still get a sample through your follicles. Not to mention, it screams "I'm guilty." You guys are funny.
Sorry bud, if you used just take the test & hope/pray there's a mix up or it slides by the detection.
Yeah but the question is do they do a hair test or not?

I've got an offer at two of the above and on hold at the other.
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on their drug test policies?
Thanks
Spinal tap drug test at all?
I believe for MS IBD SA, it's a standard urine test. I think this applies to most BB SA programs. I have not heard of any hair tests, but I could be wrong.
All are piss tests.
GS piss test MS no test
If you have to ask......
MS doesn't test...or at least didn't in the past
Blood test or it's worthless. Can't let the competition use PEDs.
Does anyone know what the timeline is for drug testing at boutiques in NYC?
Does anyone know what the timeline is for drug testing at boutiques in NYC?
They will email you at a random point before you start and ask to get your test done within 2 weeks. My advice would to just stay off the pot! It stays in your system for 40 days..
FYI they're all piss tests.
its nowhere near that long if you are in any sort of shape and stay active. But yes, better to be safe
Fair, so for FT they could test me anytime or will it be closer to the start date?
Does anyone know about what type of drug test BNY Mellon does?
