BlackRock drug test?

Hey guys,

Does anyone here have any recent employment experience with BlackRock? On their job application, it says you have to take a drug test within 72 hours of an offer, which seems a bit Gestapo-esque to me. Is this true?

Not that I have anything to worry about in terms of drugs, but a pre-employment demand like that may be indicative of the firm's overall culture, which I don't think is a good thing. It seems like a fundamental mistrust of employees.

Anyway, anyone here have any general BlackRock experience, and if so, is this true?

I don't have specific experience with BlackRock, but the 72-hour time period after the offer is made is pretty standard. Every offer I have ever gotten, with one exception, has required me to take the drug test within 72 hours of getting the verbal offer.

Every other BB I know of gives you a very large time frame before you start (i.e. no more than 30 days but no less than 5 before you start).

They make you take a drug test even if you haven't accepted the offer? What if you need time to decide between offers?

yup. 72 hour drug test is standard for most companies. bb's expect you to go through a massive cleanse / rehab program in a very short amount of time which is why they give you a few weeks to get ur drug test completed.

------------ I'm making it up as I go along.

I have experience with BlackRock. Upon arrival to the office before the first day, they handed me a map to a nearby clinic and some documentations I needed to fill out for the drug test. They wanted me to do the test on that day. I went straight to the clinic on the day and after couple of days, I cleared my drug test.

It's standard, don't worry about it.

Clear it and begin your job.
When was the last time you got a haircut? BlackRock is one of the only firms that does hair tests nowadays. Since they handle so much money they have faced outside pressure from clients to employ stricter tests.

Realistically you'll have the standard 5 Panel Drug Test http://www.5-panel-drug-test.com/
The last time that I cut my hair was last weekend. Why?

Oh BlackRock... they're known for the big one. They make you take a hair test and a piss test, and if you're in a front office roll they even make you take a blood test. They check for everything. A friend of mine actually was informed by HR after his test that not only did he have an unnaturally high level of alprazolam (Xanax) in his system, he was also HIV positive. Thank god for BlackRock, they caught it early.

College buddy of mine landed a dream offer at a top-tier consulting firm and is asked to take a hair follicle test within 2 days. So he goes into the testing facility and waits in a room for the test. The doctor comes in, looks at his shaved head, arms, and hands, and then says remove your shirt for a sample from your armpit. He takes off his shirt and raises his arm, clean like his prepubescent years. Doctor says roll up your pants to your knee. Nothing. At this point, my friend thinks he's at the home stretch and all he needs to do is just piss in a cup, which is fine since he passed a take-home self-test. Then the doctor says stand up and remove your pants. Bent over with the doctor looking for any hair on his ass, he says "so... I think you know what's going on here. I've just landed an offer for my dream job that will change my life".

We laugh about this story every time he's in town for a business trip.

@BlackHat @Determined @analyst-therapist what exactly are all of your sources to directly imply that BlackRock uses the hair test? Unless you have first hand experience yourselves why should we believe that? Care to provide some real facts and credentials on the manner?

I have a test from hireright coming up for an internship this summer, can any of you tell me whether it'll be a hair or a urine test for sure? I'd really appreciate it

A friend of mine told me he had a hair test, he's in London.

To be honest, what does it matter? None of those over-the-counter detox things work, according to a pharmacist friend. If you used, it's just a roll of the dice. You shouldn't worry about things that you have no control over. Best of luck.

On a side note, I wonder how many job offers have been cancelled over a drug that will eventually be legal.

Please don't quote Patrick Bateman.

my boy went into PMG FI. Now in his 2nd year. had a urine test the winter/spring before he started if memory serves.

but yea, shave your eyebrows/back hair/puebes just in case

I don't have any specific info but never heard of a hair test, I worked at BLK before and I didn't have any tests done (foreign office) - may I ask what the position is (is it PMG on the iShares side to be specific?), I interviewed recently for the SF office as well - waiting to hear back from HR.

I worked there until slightly more than a year ago. Seems like offers went out to a few people on WSO today (you're not the only one asking about the drug test) - now I'm getting nervous. Did you get a written offer already? I did get one call after the interviews saying they were positive and we discussed various logistics such as possible start dates and relo bonus expectations - did you have a similar experience? The whole process is getting really drawn out.

I came in through a merger - also I don't think drug tests are legal in the country I'm in so I wasn't tested at all. Not sure for the States but a hair tests seems to be a bit too much (even Goldman only does the urine test back when I was in UG) - I was in contact with someone who worked in the states to talk about the interview process but didn't ask him about their testing (I am totally clean so it didn't enter my mind to ask) - I think i'd be awkward to ask now. I'll try to ask around in a discrete way if possible (It might be hard to do now as they might suspect its me that's worried).

Even if you shave everything they can still get a sample through your follicles. Not to mention, it screams "I'm guilty." You guys are funny.

Sorry bud, if you used just take the test & hope/pray there's a mix up or it slides by the detection.
