BofA/Bear/DB (summer) to BB (full-time)

I am working at one of the above three "near"-BBs this summer. I've heard that if you summer at any of the top banks, you will get interviews at the rest for full-time.

But I am at a non-target (got interview through networking). If I do end up receiving an offer but decide I would like to interview at other banks, will I be able to without worrying about dedicating a great deal of time to networking. Will my resume be considered with the other "target" school applicants, or will the fact that the BBs don't interview at my school still be an issue.

When they do these early interviews - do they hire into specific groups, or just into a general analyst class.

For example, if a group like healthcare had availability and didn't give too many offers to their summers, would an applicant who was a a summer at another firm's healthcare group have an edge over other applicants? or would the recruiting people just not care?

I was in exactly the same situation as you last summer. I am from a non-target and interned with a firm on par with those you listed. I found that top-tier firms were very open to speaking with me, although they were not necessarily seeking me out. I had to leverage the considerable networking I had already done to get the internship into FT interviews. Doing the early interview process was also key. Make sure to get in touch with HR in June.

Once you start, learn a lot at the internship and understand modeling. If your GPA, etc. are solid, you should be fine getting interviews. It worked out for me; I'm going to a top-tier firm FT.

Anyone done the early application process in London, when they finished their internship? I’ve heard some banks do events for recent summer analysts. Do you call hr or fill in an on-line app and wait?

Before anybody says that on-line apps don’t get viewed, in the U.K the on-line app system works. From my experience if you’re a potential candidate you get contacted within 4-21 days.

Yes. most banks offer get¨-together events during the later part of the internship. Try to make contacts with interns at other banks or call their HR and inquire about getting an invite as a summer at another bank.

It is considered a coup to get other bank's interns at your events.

In the states, when do summer interns find out they recieved an offer for FT? Are you invited back at final assesment day or must you wait a few days for a call back to be notified of a FT offer?

I received my offer letter during my exit interview on the last day of my internship.

How exactly does this work? Do you email HR and be like, "Hi I am working at so and so bank but wanted to find out when you guys are having your get together events?" Or do you just ask summer interns at those banks when they are and you just show up?

I am also curious about the procedure and contacting other banks while you are still in your current internship. Do they not think it is weird that you are even giving them a thought before spending a significant amount of time at your current bank? What do you say when they ask you why you want to work there instead of this other place - you obviously can't say well you didn't take me the first time around but now... or is that what they want to hear?

I was interning at one bank and I thought I didn't want to return, so I started contacting other banks while the internship was still going. The other banks were very receptive b/c I had a good rationale for not wanting to return. That's the key - you need a good explanation for why you don't like the bank where you're interning (maybe it's fit, or you want a rotational first-year experience, etc). If you didn't get in at a BB and you're interning at a "lesser" bank, you could use the fact that you want a global platform as a reason. I think, if you made a good impression during interviews, it's a good idea to contact other banks around midway through the summer. BUT, you need to decide if you can trust the bankers at the bank you contact to not say anything. Remember, people have friends all over, and the last thing you want is for someone at your current bank to find out you're shopping around. That's the big risk.

when did you do your interviews?
I did the interviews after my internship but before official interviewing started. One of the good things about doing an internship is that other banks will often interview you early if you have a full-time offer after interning b/c they want to try to get you before you have to decide about your full-time offer. Of course, you have to get a full-time offer in order for this to work in your favor.

I was in the same position as you. It was a total nightmare. No shortcuts to interviews for a Big Ten student like me, even if he'd interned for a BB. I had to submit all of my job applications online. My firm wanted me to get back to them by Nov. 1st, and the other banks didn't get back to me until late November.

I'd suggest continuing to network this summer. You're not going to get any useful interviews from submitting resumes online unless you can convince the bank that you're worth waiting 'til February for.

I thought unis/ school career centers have a non-exploding offer agreement with the firms?

Well, first off, I'm in the College of Engineering, where the hiring process is a total free-for-all. For me, the bank said "Nov. 1st," and I happily obliged.

However, I think this issue is applicable to any school that doesn't have banks recruit on campus (My school gets Citigroup, JPM/Chase, Morgan Stanley, and GS, but not all I-Banks.) The issue is that a lot of the interview offers to online applicants seem to come out after the deadline date for the target schools. In other words, if you apply online, you won't get an offer until January. This will be well after whatever deadline date your firm or school will allow.
