Boutique consulting
I'll be graduating in May with a politics degree. The consulting field looks interesting to me, but I have some concerns. First, traveling a lot does not appeal to me at all. I've also heard that consultants can work 12+ hours a day, another element that is off-putting. I've heard that some boutique consulting firms generally do local work and don't travel much. I'd like to settle in either the D.C., New York, or Chicago areas (in order of preference) and was wondering if there are any consulting firms with little travel and normal 8-10 hour days, or do I need to find a different field to get in to.
You need a different field. Depending on how small the company is you'll wear many hats and expecting a normal 40-ish work week is not reasonable. They might also tell you that they do local work and you'll be home but the current reality of the market is that consulting companies take any contract they can, wherever it is. You ever heard the saying, "the best kind of client is the client that pays"?. They'll send you wherever that client is. So unless you want a future of Seat 16B, Applebees and Hampton Inns, I would find another line of work.

There are plenty of places where you don't have to do much travel, but you need to be prepared to occasionally stay late at night and/or come in on the weekends. It's just how it is. If you never want to stay at work past 8pm and never come in on a weekend you should look into working for the government or a non profit.

McKinsey is coach + 1 (business in a 3 class cabin, first in a 2 class cabin) for flights over 3.5 hours, coach for anything under. My understanding is that McKinsey's travel policy is the most luxurious of MBB.
I bought F last week, only cause I had to buy it on a Saturday before flying out Monday morning, and not many seats on a CRJ900. Upgrades were pretty good late last year though.

Our policy is coach for short flights, unless you're a "road warrior" and hit a certain number of miles in a year, at which case they will let you fly business.
I haven't reviewed the policy lately, but I think even Partners are expected to fly coach on client engagements unless otherwise specified.
As said above: - Optics. Why should some associate be flying first class on a 1 hour flight? - What the client is willing to reimburse. (Their money, their expense policies)
I'd be pretty suprised if in the current economic state other firms are that much better...we're a big firm, with a pretty comparable travel policies from what I've seen and heard from other consultants at hotels. In quite a few cases, better off than the IBM guys who were in my hotel by a few dollars on per diems....but same for travel, identical to other Big 4 firms.
But who knows, maybe MBB is all first class and steak 3 meals a day...I'll ask my friend at BCG, but it didn't sound like it last time.
I posted what McKinsey is, and I have heard it's the most luxurious among MBB.

Also, there's Parthenon/Mars/Monitor, all of which are very highly regarded, not really sure if you would call them "boutiques," however.

It's tough to clearly separate boutiques from the bigs in consulting. I discuss it somewhat on my blog - www.managementconsulted.com
My advice here is to look at the Vault Top 50 consulting firms. Anything outside the top 10 is sufficiently small to be considered a "boutique" (eg, fewer multinational clients, fewer to no international offices, functional/industry specializations)
Some that I've come across include: -Slalom Consulting -Kurt Salmon -Sapient
And yes, they do provide good exit opps to b-school but very few have the well-known cachet that strong boutique investment banks do (like a Lazard). You may have strong connections at specific bschools given the partners' alma maters so it's something I'd inquire about during the interview process in an indirect way.

After applying for a variety of different positions, in May, I started a great internship that enables me to leverage my science/biomedical background toward consulting. This consulting firm is more of a competitive intelligence firm that does more of primary/secondary research on info for biotech companies. My goal is to eventually work in management consulting (hopefully after gaining some experience at this company). How likely or difficult would it be to land a job at a top management consulting firm after this?
