Broking: shipping, voice... your take?
Is that a cool industry to join?
What is the compensation structure for voice brokers? And electronic brokers? What about shipping broker?
I'm also curious as to what the exit opportunities are.
Thanks for sharing, guys,
Compensation is potentially excellent for all in the long term.
Shipbroking cannot be lumped in with financial markets related jobs and they try and differentiate themselves from this also.
Shipbroking, apart from through ICAP I believe, is not really something you can get into without contacts. Many shipbrokers' fathers or relations worked in the job for example.
Broking in general can be somewhat of a zoo. Lots of adrenalin!
No idea re exit opps.
The comp can be pretty good, but you have to be continually pandering to the traders, and be willing to take abuse and not say anything. The worst for brokers is if no one is trading, because then they don't make money.

switch "broker" for "institutional salesman" and you've got the same true statement. though the nights out are less extreme.
