Bulge Bracked IBD interview recruiting policies

Hello,

I come from a non target school and trying extremely hard to break into Investment Banking. I been networking with alumni over the past couple of weeks to better understand the opportunities available. By luck I got invited by the HR of a BB (JPM/BAML/MS/GS) for a fit interview. I had also been simultaneously in touch with the alumni who just started working in the IBD as analyst for the firm and told him that i got invited for a fit interview. In the email, I had mentioned that I would be at the office to meet with HR and would like to meet him as well after that. The interview with HR went really well and she does not know about me meeting with him, but after the meeting I had called him as he told me to and met with him in the cafeteria and he started grilling me on various topics and I was caught off guard but he was also simultaneously giving me advice on being prepared in the future and his experiences in the recruiting process. So I don't know if he was evaluating (interviewing) me or advising me and I was also curious if this would have any impact on my future progress with the process. I don't know if I am being paranoid but any thoughts and opinions based on your experiences with BB recruiting practices would be appreciated.

I hope you are not a senior right now.

But assuming you are, you are really late in the game.

The analyst was good in the sense he gave you advices on how to prepare but you probably will not be able to leverage anything out of him since you bombed your informal interview

As far as recruiting process goes, keep on networking and prepare for interviews if anything come up. Try to get your resume in front of the right people ( analyst or associate who review the resume).

Besides that...if you are a graduating senior, you should also look for other boutique shops because it's very hard to get into any BBs coming from where you are now

Yes I am a senior.. ...... I had started the networking & recruiting efforts as soon as the summer analyst programs were wrapped up. So I don't know if I was late because the feedback I got was that the interviews take place early to late October. So I doubt your claims unless you happen to be working in a particular BB which has already completed the recruiting efforts.

I think Ricqles means you are "really late in the game" if you're a senior still trying to network now (before interviews in October/November) from a non-target. If you have a bunch of interviews currently lined up, you're good to go -- just make sure you're prepared for them.

Your alumnus was definitely testing you to see if you are "worthy" of him promoting you to his colleagues for future interviews within the firm. Just because he is an alumnus of your school does not mean he will automatically give you a free pass -- even if you're both from a non-target -- because his reputation is on the line as well in terms of who he recommends.

Okay I see where you are coming from as far as networking timeline is concerned. But since he was testing me and I was caught off guard he may not recommend me for the future but I hope he will not report back to HR with whom I had the formal interview (which went very well) and tell them not to hire me. Also I did not get the interview through him in the first place and he started working only a couple of weeks back and was telling me that he wanted to get into recruiting activity for the firm soon. Any thoughts on this guys. Thanks
