You're handed a business card and it says "student"...
What do you think? Pretentious or one way to stand out? Friend of mine mentioned that it helped her a lot while networking, but I can't imagine handing this to someone who has the power to make or break me.
Thoughts?
In my university, this is actually very common. There are plenty of students handing out their "business cards". To a certain degree it makes sense, but it does sometimes come off as pretentious.
Its pretty common for MBA students.
I should've been more clear, I was talking about undergrad. I wouldn't think it happens often, so I was wondering if that's an advantage.
Its gonna be a no from me dog
The only business card that matters...
Student business cards? (Originally Posted: 05/09/2013)
Recently I went to my university careers centre to try and suss out what my current career prospects are like and to try and find out how best to go about trying to break into consulting.
It was useless...Didn't get any real constructive feedback. Only vague and highly generic observations- "Oooh, this is a nicely formatted Resume... Oooh that is some interesting work experience..."
During the conversation I asked for any practical tips for networking and the adviser mentioned getting student business cards. At the time I thought it was really stupid, but quick searches on Google suggest others have also recommended such a move.
From an IBD or MC perspective, would this come off as really stupid and potentially back fire, branding you as a silly twat?
Yes. Don't do it. Really stupid idea.
My school gives us probably about 500 for free. I think I've used one. People have said they've had some good experiences with them, I mostly just leave them behind at restaurants after I pay as joke, no one takes them seriously.
Don't use them in the USA
Don't. If you're networking, ask for their card. Then follow up and they then have your contact information.
Giving a busy banker your card would not get you anywhere. If would end up in the trash or lost on his(her) desk and never used.
It would definitely be memorable... . . . . . . . . .
but not in a good way.
I trying to suss out what you're thinking with this clown post ... of course you should get them otherwise all the bankers you meet will have no way of contacting you. I'd get something in a subtle off-white with a tasteful thickness, preferably with your photo.
you mean like this?

I have the same question. Can I have a business card as a summer analyst? People are not going to write down my phone number or email. What do you guys think?

Overseas perspective: here in Japan most students have them, and it you don't it's because you've gone all-digital with your contact lists; even then it's bad form to meet someone over about 50 and not have one. My university even offered cards with its logo embossed; you had to bring your student card with you or they wouldn't let you have that logo. Cost was about 23¢ per card, in packs of 100. I think I went through about 200 of them just in daily life.
Monkey students/interns with Business cards? (Originally Posted: 12/23/2016)
I was wondering what the opinion on WSO is about students/interns with their own business cards. I had a networking drink a few weeks ago and one of the students had his own business cards with him which he handed to all employees (and some students). He had his contacts and "Graduate XX program from XX University" on it.
I am not sure if I think it is smart as the people you meet will surely remember you and you can hand them out throughout your whole student time. On the other hand you might come across a bit posh and seem like you think you own the world.
What do you all think?
I had them. They were useful for me in finding a real estate job. It is 100% a networking game and you can't carry your resume and contact information with you everywhere you go. I listed Name, Education, Desired Industry, a link to my LinkedIn, phone # and email.
Business Cards for Students | Thoughts? (Originally Posted: 04/21/2016)
I'm wondering what people think/what protocols are for students making business cards - my assessment of two opposing opinions below:
On one hand this is sort of useless - during interviews for most jobs no one really expects a business card from students or those who don't already have a position in some company or organization. I have seen people make them with their university name on them (and some even use the university logo which is technically improper and/or a violation in some cases possibly); but I'm not sure that really adds much and may just emphasize that they're a student or, alternatively, unemployed.
Maybe this isn't useless. Certainly in social 'networking' type situations that aren't quite as formal a business card might just be a passing nicety that's assumed - I have found most people simply misplace the ones they collect anyway.
A solution is perhaps just a card with one's name, website, contact information, maybe list graduate year if you are a student; that sort of thing.
Wonder what others think about this?
No, please don't do this
if a student tried to network with me for an interview and gave me a vistaprint business card that said 'incoming summer analyst candidate,' i swear i will go out of my way to get you blacklisted.
The clue is in the name "business" cards, you doing much business?
what the fuck is this.
