business courses instead of internship
For the summer, I decided to take business/ finance courses instead of an unpaid internship on wall street cold calling people (very small firm). I want to go into investment banking, but is my decision the best choice? I've already paid for my classes and it's not worth it backing out now.
I'll be taking courses at my school (target). I thought that if I did the internship, I wouldn't be able to get much out of it. Instead, the finance courses might prepare me for a better internship in the future, meaning summer before junior year. Plus, it would boost my gpa, considering I did poorly first semester of freshman year.
thanks for sharing.
Well, you see, what you do in an internship and how useful it is depends a lot on the internship. For example, I had a summer job at a hedge fund sitting next to the head compliance guy and we shared many a laugh. He bought his pot through some polish hookers, which made me conclude that compliance could be a boring job but could also be an interesting job, depending very much on the individual doing the job.
+1
I went for the interview and I saw the guys who made the calls. They were all set up at a small table in the office, making calls. Didn't look like i was going to "share a laugh" with anyone, other than the customer on the phone.
Regardless of what you'd be doing having an extra internship on your resume would have been significantly more helpful than taking some classes. Your first couple of internships won't necessarily be the greatest experiences but they show your interest in finance much better than classes. Not to mention almost everyone has some sort of experience prior to their junior year, so previous internships are a must
This. I am going on my second internship before my junior year and hoping I have enough to combat a lower gpa.
If you're worried about your GPA then the summer classes will help (if you get all 4.0s) your more than the internship.
I would say taking summer school, getting ahead on your course work and good grades, and enjoying life will be much more valuable in the long run than what sounds like a penny-stock boiler room which will have little/no relevance to actual IB
If it's a final decision, do you want real input or do you want people to tell you that you've made the right decision?
