Business School Class Rank

Couple of quick questions for those of you in the know:

Do B Schools give you a class rank or some sort of percent grouping (top 5%,10% etc) and are you allowed to include that on your resume?

Also, say you graduate at the top of your class- are you given a "summa cum laude" designation or is that only in undergrad and law school?

top graduate school honors, class rankings, and awards

MBA programs have academic honors for the top 10% of the graduating class. However, graduating without high academic honors will not make or break you.

Class rank is far less important than your reputation among your classmates. assignments at business school are mostly group-based. If you are known as an idiot or slacker, you won't get hired anywhere because the recruiting companies will know about your bad rep through recent alumni hires.

Official rank at my school was not publicly announced, however graduating with distinction/honors was a relatively big deal. Officially, your hiring company will not know you are bottom 10%, but they will know if your classmates think you are a fool.

I have an MBA and work in BB.

Schools have different designations for students who achieve strong marks in their classes. For example, this is from the wikipedia page on HBS:

The top academic honor at HBS is the Baker Scholar designation (High Distinction), given to the top 5% of the graduating MBA class. In a typical year a Baker Scholar will have achieved "1s" in approximately 70 - 75% of his or her course credits. Students receiving honors (top 20%) in both their first and second years are awarded the MBA degree with Distinction. The student who receives the highest grades in each year of the program is awarded the Henry Ford II scholarship and is known as the Ford Scholar. For a typical student to attain this honor, he/she must achieve the highest available grade in each of the eleven MBA classes during the first year of the program. Other academic distinctions include the Thomas M. and Edna E. Wolfe Award, given to recognize scholastic excellence (generally to the student with the highest grade in the class) and the Loeb prize given for the most outstanding performance in finance. Until 2005, HBS also awarded the Siebel Scholarship to each of the top five students in the first year of the program. However for reasons that were not publicised this was recently withdrawn.

I've wondered this myself. My understanding is that GPA is largely meaningless except for IB, MC, and AM (i realize that hardly makes it meaningless on this board). Current students could perhaps shed more light on the typical perception of GPA/class rank (not just HBS). Most of the recent students I've spoken with stress the importance of networking far more than GPA but I'm sure that depends largely on the program and ones intended career path.

Obviously, you can't fail out, but that's very very very hard to do in b-school. Beyond that, no one cares what your MBA class rank is. Not being glib here, NO ONE CARES. Business school isn't law school. People care about what your experience is and how you carry yourself. If you start to brag about how you were valedictorian, they'll think you are a) weird, b) missed the entire point of b-school, and c) probably could have done a lot less studying and a lot more networking, entrepreneuring, leading a trip to build houses in Africa, etc, etc, etc...
