Buy Side Asset Manager vs Asset Management arm of BB Investment Bank.

Hey all,
Had a couple general questions about the AM side of the industry.

  1. Is it "significantly" harder to break into a buy side Asset Manager like BlackRock vs the AM arm of a BB Investment Bank like GSAM out of undergrad? What differentiates the two? (Im guessing its just the size of AUM?)

  2. How do the two compare against each other in lifestyle(hours) and compensation? as well as compared to IB?

  3. Would it be fair to say that both types of AM have less of an "up or out" culture compared to Banking?

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.
