I emailed a Principal at a P/E firm, we are both alums from the same school. He emailed me back saying I should call him whenever i'm free. I called his office number twice at two different times but it went straight to voicemail. He also lists his cell phone number in his signature. Is it appropriate for me to call his cell? I don't want to come off as too strong or anything.

Just leave a message and let him get back to you. If you play phone tag a few times, shoot him an email and ask when a good time to call would be.

Agreed. I would try to avoid calling his cellphone number unless he directly states it. Usually cellphone numbers are listed in signatures in case clients cannot reach him at his office.
