Can a bad roommate ever be an excuse for bad grades?

So I was a 'fresh out of the boat' international student and was shocked to find that there was so much unfettered drug usage in a mid-ivy league college. I was unable to fend for myself though, and just condoned the sex, drugs and marijuana that my roommate brought in in freshman year. Admittedly it wasn't severe, but I had two instances where the roommate had sex in my room when I was sleeping, and more than ten instances where my roommate would smoke pot in the room with others or by himself. Even if you were cool about marijuana itself, how is smoking cigarettes illegal while pot has to be condoned. But anyways that's how I felt at the time; I thought I should be cool about it. In the end, I was accustomed to studying in my room so that took a lot of time away for me from studying.

That trauma went far; I felt I was never able to ask for help or fend for myself. I'm not sure this is my fault; can this ever be a good excuse for bad grades in college? Since then I have a good track record in my work and am at a top masters program despite my extremely poor performance in college; I think this tells a lot about my psychological state at the time; I had trauma with drinking and fighting before coming to college as well as the bad experience with the roommate. My coping strategy is though that I always condone everyone else's bad behavior while I try not to act that way. I mean, sometimes this strategy is touted as being good in Asia "be harsh to yourself, but be generous to others'. But in the US or in other places for that matter it seems to be the opposite, or at least the case that if you don't speak up for yourself you will be taken advantage of. Is this a cultural thing or am I the one who is being a total doormat? I'm not entirely sure.

Just a thought.

I feel you, I blame the weather for my poor college grades. I went to a school that had bad luck with weather for 4 years and I simply cannot deal with the trauma, heartache, and pain that comes with rainy/cloudy/snowy/cold days.

I need a consistent 72.0 to 72.5 degrees and a sunny day with clear skies and wind that is less than 5mph in order to study efficiently. I should have spoken up about this and built my own multi-billion dollar enclosed ecosystem (i.e. bio-dome) but I was only able to complete 3.5% of this project before the bad weather and bad grades overwhelmed me.

On a serious note.. I noticed the same symbolism in the Batman movie between Bane and the society, with the whole need for the 'white knight' to keep criminals out of control. It's the reason it's one of the best movies to me. People don't know what they want, and there's a need for something revolutionary to put things back on a balanced scale even though that revolution is not yet defined, as to what it can be.

For your purposes, I just think that you are taking the behavior of your roommates too seriously. They're college kids and don't really have a lot better to do but do their little drugs and have chicks over (especially if they're some good looking ivy kid, no offense to ivy kids). If you were willing to try it with them, you might find that they are willing to work with you in terms of smoking. You could try leveling with them. That's not really that deep to be thinking about how society works.. communism and capitalism are too vastly different social constructs and it was miserable listening to him because I'm so schooled to think capitalism is superior (because it is)

EDIT: or, tbh, you could have just ratted on them. It would've been a funny spectacle if squirming and it wouldn't be the first time a kid got blown up for blatant disrespect.
