Can a GMAT pull interviews?
After graduating from a total non-target, I'm now in a MAcc program at a school where, in addition to several smaller advisory firms, MBB is recruiting. My overall profile is pretty weak. I have a spotty but not terrible GPA from undergrad, severely lacking ECs, one totally unrelated internship, and no existing network in consulting (or anything else for that matter). The one thing I do have going for me is a > 750 GMAT. I know consulting firms like that kind of thing, but it's really a lone bright spot in my profile.
Anyways, my question is should I even bother going to info sessions and filling out applications online? Time is really at a premium at this point, and even going through the motions would be a pretty large investment. By attending consulting info sessions I miss out on those from several tier 2 accounting firms with which I'd have much better odds. However, if there's even a slight chance that I can land a first round interview with any consulting firm, I'm confident that I can come across as a really bright guy and would be willing to take the risk.
Thoughts?
I'd swing for the fences on this. Sounds like you're good at standardized tests. McKinsey does a proprietary standardized test after resume drops at targets that can go a long way towards getting you an interview. Just make sure you've run through Case in Point by the time you interview so you don't waste your time and theirs.
> 750 sounds pretty good - would have been better if you said exactly what. For e.g. if it were >780 I'd definitely suggest giving it a shot. Just make sure you sharpen your resume (really get it looked at by some in the target firms) and do some solid case interview practice.
You said your time is at a premium. Given your situation I'd say sleep less and deal with it ;)
I hate to bring the bad news, but I think your chances at even getting an interview are very, very slim. These top consultancies get tons of applications from very well-qualified people (and reject a lot of them), and I seriously doubt that your one plus - the GMAT - can make up for bad grades, no ECs, etc. You should give it a shot though.
