Can a Goldman Sachs MD (London) help you to get an interview for the IBD?
A few days ago, I met a GS MD from London - who is with the firm over 15 years and works in IBD - during a recruiting event. He said he was impressed with my story and would like to have a look at my CV. Do you think that a person in his position help you to reach the interview stage directly?
Yes I know people who were in that situation and the MD helped them to get to the first interview but from there on it's all you.
Thanks for your response. It sounds great. Do you have any advice how I should leverage such contacts? I mean MDs are very busy and tend to forget things quickly given the amount of work they must complete. And when you send emails and follow up, they might think that it's too much to them.
Well you said that he would like to have a look at your CV, so just send him a short and polite email with your CV and maybe ask if he has 5-10 minutes for a quick call. Don't be pushy though, he knows that you want a job.
MD help from afar worth it? (Originally Posted: 10/21/2013)
A good friend knows an MD of a regional MM firm pretty well and offered to "put in a good word" for me since I recently applied. This MD is in a different city/state than where I applied. Will it help? Do MDs in one spot generally have any sway in another?
It may not help, but I'm sure it can't hurt...why not try it? At the least you could potentially talk to this MD about relevant deals, why that firm, find out what the firm looks for in its hires etc.
if he's legit, i feel like it would. i got interviews at CS NYC through alums in regional CS offices.
It would only help if that MD is very close and/or influential to the MD concerned with the role you are applying for.
Thanks for the input. I guess it won't hurt to at least meet with her for an informational meeting and see if she can do anything.
