CBS: apply late for ED or apply early for RD?

Hi all,

I submitted my CBS ED application a few days ago and still waiting for the recommendation letter. My recommender told me that he probably won't be able to finish it until very close to deadline (next Wed).

I know CBS is on rolling basis so I'm worried that my chance to get admitted would be severely affected if he submitted last minute and most seats in early decision round are taken. Will it help if I postpone application one day after early decision deadline to beginning of regular round (then I will be the first few in regular round)?

Thanks!

NO. ED gives one a pretty big advantage for admissions. Even if you submitted for RD now, your application will not be read until early December since adcom is still reading ED and J-term applications. Strategically, it makes no sense. By applying ED, you are telling CBS that you WILL attend if admitted, thus boosting its yield; moreover, the ED applicant pool in my opinion is a lot weaker than RD.

Thanks. I will make sure it gets submitted in ED round.

Definitely apply ED if CBS is where you want to be. First of all, Admissions has said that most of their ED apps come in on the final few days before the deadline, so you won't be out of the norm there. Second, there is not a set number of "ED Seats". The bottom line is that applying ED will give you the most available seats since your app will be read before anyone from RD, and as mentioned, will show your intention to attend.
