MBA and CFA for Hedge Fund
Dear all,
I have some questions regarding the value of MBA and CFA for hedge fund.
I have a finance postgraduate degree from a top uni and more than 2 years of BB investment banking experience in London. Currently i work at a megafund (think KKR, Blackstone, TPG etc) in Asia.
So in short, i dont think i need any more finance education in order for me to perform my job. But, is MBA or CFA somewhat a pre-requisite for HF? I heard CFA is very useful for Asset Management, but i am not sure how useful it is for HF.
I am mainly interested in fundamental driven HF such as event driven, or long/short given my background. I am considering a MBA in the US as I would love to work there. How hard is post MBA recruiting for HF given my background? I dont want to spend all these money on a MBA if i dont think i have a good chance of getting into a HF in the US. Also i need work Visa to work in the US, so that might be an obstacle as well?
Thank you.
dude, is it really necessary to post the same question 20 fucking times?
If you have BB experience and megafund experience I would argue you don't need either to transfer to a HF. I think its more important that you iron out the style of investing / research that you want to be doing. If its fundamental equity research narrow your search to value, deep value, growth, GARP etc. funds based on your preference. And yes, the CFA is useful for HF work but with your background why go through the 3+ years of pain to get it.
thanks alot guys. Good to hear that i dont actually need a CFA for hedge fund. However would you think if another candidate that has a CFA and is competing with me for a HF job, will I be disadvantaged?
Also because of compliance restrictions at my current fund, i am actually not allow to purchase any individual stocks while working for them. I am thinking of using some visual stock stimulator and do my own research on a few sectors for investment ideas and see how that will turn out in the visual stock stimulator. do you think that is helpful experience for me when i go for HF interviews in the future? Too bad that i cannot trade any stocks at all now...
It depends on the other candidates background. If he has similar BB experience, Yes you will be disadvantaged. The CFA is grueling, and employers understand that so to have sat and passed all 3 levels is a big feather in your cap.
I see....i guess i have try without a CFA first to see if i can land a job there....thank you.
