Any UK themed SA thread
The title says it all really, I'm looking for people from the UK to discuss SA roles. All other threads seem to be US focused. Anyone know which apps are open? I know GS is.

UK summer intern- advice please (Originally Posted: 12/30/2010)
I am a international student reading MSc degree in the UK, and managing to get into IB. Compared with China, IB here is more institutionalized. So, I am looking to apply for summer analyst job in the UK.
I applied for 5 IBDs' summer intern programs based in London with 4 rejection emails.
Here is my statue:
Bachelor: Major in Law, with economics minor at China top 4 university
Master: Joint Master program in Financial Economics, 1st year at UK target university, 2nd year go back to China `Work experience: GM-marketing-3 months-intern-China BCG -3 months- intern-China Bain Capital (PE)-3 months-part timer-chinaIs my education background of kind weird? It is hard to explain on the online application system that i am actually a penultimate-year student. Because all MSc programs in the UK run one year. Although i state it on my CV, I am not sure whether hr would read CV carefully.
My second question: is the citizenship a big issue? I am non UK citizen, and will go back to China Oct. 2011 to continue the 2nd part of my joint degree program. I know summer intern program is the pipeline of companies. Would hr think that my next stage studying in China will bring uncertainty about whether I would back?
How many non-UK and non-EU received IB summer analyst offers every year? If the opportunities for people in my statue are rare, I may change my mind to apply a summer intern in HK or China.
I would really appreciate your advices and any replies.
Well from what you've stated your qualis look good to me. Going through online apps, luck is also involved to a certain extent and I don't think that your background warrants a rejection per se. Did you apply in time? Maybe you should have cast your net wider. Then make sure to spell check your apps.
Your citizenship won't be an issue: there are lots of Chinese/Asian kids in LDN in FO roles. Nevertheless, I would also apply to HK or China

You can work full-time during vacations while your UK student visa is valid. Also, I think your English isn't very fluent, get a friend to proof-read your CV and Covering Letter before you send them out. Also, I think you should have mentioned in your Cover Letter or somewhere on the application form that you are a penultimate year student. Why did you apply to only 5 internships? I remember applying to atleast 15-20 last year.
Do you go to the LSE per chance? I know they have some tie up with Tsinghua University..
It will prob be the language thing coming through in the CV/Cover Letter/App, because you have solid experience and should be getting interviews.

My own major concern is how to show my analytical and quantitative ability in the Work Experience section.
If others could offer constructive criticism that would be great!
Thanks
bump.
Some comments: - leave out secondary school bit - what happened between September 2011 and July 2013? - include ROI on spread trading - Investing section looks weak, I'd recommend leaving it out - formatting in general needs to improve - interests section - only non-finance stuff
Updated. Will replace the last line of the Further work experience section with a new line under Skills, Interests and Activities when the website I'm designing finally launches.
-leave out A levels; irrelevant -way too many subpoints; less is more -formatting of skills, activities and interests section -don't list a book under interests; it's just silly
Been through UK recruiting recently, PM me if you want
Why are a-levels irrelevant?

Hi, I am currently applying for SA programmes in London for IBD, and I have a few questions:
1.) I am in good contact with a few alumni / random connections at some BB banks in London. Now here, all applications are done through long online systems, which include numerical tests, competency questions, etc.. I am wondering if the same tactic of getting a connection to submit your CV to HR applies, as in the USA, or is going through the online system mandatory?
2.) I got a email list of IBD staff at at BB from one of the connections, who said I could try them for a chat. Would it be better to go to the MD level, or an associate, when networking in?
3.) I am also applying at probably a dozen or so boutiques. My action plan here is to email employees who I can find on the website and ask for a short phone call.. Build a relationship, then ask for some help. Is this a good tactic if done well, or will it just piss them off? Also, same as 2.), should I be contacting the lower, mid, or highest guys?
Thanks a lot, and a happy new year,
Peat
edit:: misread your post
Ummm... better hurry up with those SA applications, I hope you know its already too late, I have friends who have already interviewed and accepted SA offers from UBS, Barcap, JPM and DB amongst others.
what boutiques are you thinkin of applying to?
I believe the following boutiques haven't started interviewing but I'm not sure- Perella Weinberg, Gleacher and Moelis. I'd hurry if I was you! Moelis is recruiting heavily as they're trying to scale up their London presence.
@peat:
1) You still go through online, however you are flagged if someone is pulling for you. I got interviews at one of the BB's when i was interviewing simply because I impressed someone, I still had to submit my app though.
@acs_london:
UBS does recruiting extremely early for SA compared to other banks, and a lot of kids have fast tracks from spring weeks. A lot of summer recruiting occurs Jan/Feb as well.
Hi, thanks for your posts.
I have applied to 9 BBs for IBD already, as well as Rothschild, Blackstone, Jefferies, Cornell Partnership people, and a few others. Now, I am moving onto PWP, Moelis, Greenhill, Evercore, Gleacher, and probably hammering on some less well known boutiques as backups. I might also try and get a few weeks doing VC/PE, as that is my potential final goal.
Speaking of which -- anyone know anything about LDC (Lloyds Development Capital) ? Haven't heard much about them here..
Also, the general consensus is that I should wait until after new years to start hassling people, correct?
Best wishes
Your list of applications sounds good, and the advice so far has been pretty spot on. One important thing about networking in the UK is that you can talk about your contacts in interviews. I have interviewed with a lot of the firms you listed, so pm me if you have specific questions.
afroman23
How do you apply to Moelis London? On the website (http://www.moelis.com/careers/submitApplication.php) is only a NY address. Same question for Jefferies.
Thx & good luck guys
For Moelis, send your CV and Covering Letter to [email protected] before 15th January (That's the deadline stated in their ad on my uni's Careers Service website; I'd email ASAP if I was you)
Moelis would have posted an email address for SA applications on your university's careers service. I'll try to dig it up for you. You need to apply to jefferies through the cornell partnership, are you applying for IB or S&T, PM me I'll send you the links (different links for IB & S&T)..

Do UK offices of banks recruit from the US? I see the option on SA applications but I'd imagine it'd be easier for them to only interview UK-based applicants and am wondering if it's worth applying for...
I'm going to be interviewed for a top boutique in the UK and I go to a US top-10 LAC with a sub 3.5 gpa. If even I can get an interview, I think that you should go for the option.
Yes but you may want to hurry up. Deadlines for many banks are fast approaching/have already passed (e.g Barcap)
How did you get your interview? Did you have any connections?
Also, is there a list of UK Banks anywhere? I am studying abroad in th spring and was thinking of just taking a trip to London to meet with banks.
Chances of UK internships? Any UK users here? (Originally Posted: 08/02/2013)

I know my chances are very slim, but will my lack of extracurriculars + non-target basically screw me? Or if I apply early will I still have a shot at any interviews?
I'm doing an engineering degree. IBD looks more appealing to me, but should I basically give up on that and apply to s&t because of lack of leadership experience and the fact I'm stronger at quantitative stuff?
Do cover letters barely matter in the UK?
The good thing about the UK is that everyone applies through the online system, unlike the on campus stuff you find in the US. However, you are still at a disadvantage vs target unis but just not as much. I went to a non target in the UK and I was offered interviews at 4 BB banks for S&T summer internship through the online app. So if you are a strong candidate and have a strong CV that shows this, you do have a shot.
He's not a strong candidate. Sorry to be harsh OP, but this is the reality. Cover letters count for shit. Get part-time work during the year.
Network your ass off with the smaller firms and try and get ANY kind of work in the City. Honestly you won't have much luck with the BBs but a lot of the brokers / smaller firms will hire good people.
Feel free to pm me if you want to chat in private.
So how much does networking influence hiring in the UK (vs. US)? If I go on several informal interviews, will this increase my chances of getting an interview as much as if I would do this in the US?
Merchant Banking Internships UK? (Originally Posted: 11/29/2014)
I've applied to GS but I highly doubt I'll get it as I'm from a subtarget (russell group [although I have friends who have gotten into GS]) so I was wondering what other firms offer merchant banking internships?
