Chose the wrong summer internship, what options do I still have for FT recruitment? (credit to equity?)
My background:
-undergrad going into my senior year at a top Canadian business school (think Ivey, Queen’s)
-fairly average GPA
-interested in investing, although deal teams are good too
Basic situation:
This summer I’m working at a multinational insurance company as a part of the fixed income (bond) investing team. However, after I started the job I realized it wasn’t the fixed income investing role that I thought it would be. Instead, I'm working as a “credit analyst” and my main responsibilities include analyzing existing issuers within the portfolio to determine internal credit rating/outlook and (once in a while) making recommendations about maintaining/changing position (similar to credit research I suppose?).
While my coworkers have been very helpful from start I don’t think I am learning much just from doing reports. I’m also worried the role will limit my options for FT recruitment as ideally I still want to work with equities. I'm looking to stay in Canada.
Some options I'm considering: Equity Research, Asset Management(both equity and fixed income), Corporate Banking, DCM, Rating Agency & Debt Research
So I’m just wondering…
What roles should I realistically recruit for given this internship?
What are my chances of getting into ER or AM?
All insights will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Literally in the same position. Also very interested in what people have to say
Bump.
Just do your best to learn as much as you can at your current position. You can look for another position at a boutique firm that you might be able to do after this one is over. There's always the off-cycle internship option as well, if you're willing to take a semester or two off from school.
Well unfortunately my school doesn't allow us to take time off, so I''ll have to recruit for FT this September. But thanks for the comment!
