citi s&t or goldman market risk
I have an offer from Citi S&T for a summer analyst position and a Goldman Sachs final round for market risk next week. Assuming I get it which do you think would be better for long term career growth? If I take the market risk position will I be stuck in back office? Thanks I appreciate any hel.
Citi S&T. It's not even a close call. Market risk is not an FO position, and as it has been discussed here MANY times, it's not particularly easy to move from BO to FO.
At Citi, you're going to be on the trading floor, actually working in the FO. If you really want to do market risk, knock yourself out, but if you think you're going to move from market risk to trading, you're pretty delusional.
If it weren't Goldman, would you even consider it? I mean--there are a lot of prestige whores out there, but working in the FO of any BB >>>>>> than working in the BO of any BB (especially when it comes to exit opportunities).
At least the Citi position will give you something interesting to talk about during FT recruitment. No one is going to give a shit about your market risk experience.
Although, it is market risk, the Goldman name carries a lot of weight and will definitely help you move forward. I'm not knocking Citi S&T which is an incredible position. I had a friend who had interned at JPM for market risk 2 years ago, and he landed a Lazard IBD for full-time. There are always exit opps if you are smart and have a great bank name. If you want to get into Investment Management/Asset Management, Sales & Trading, Equity Research then I would take Citi S&T.
thanks guys. really helpful. i was thinking the citi position for the front office role. The only reason I was considering was because it is goldman. I wasn't sure if the name would give me better exit opportunities for FT at the top BB for front office. It makes sense though that a more relevant experience would be more helpful though. Any ideas on the bests desks to try to get at Citi?

I wouldn't be too concerned about the specific desk yet, get in there and figure it out
congrats on the offers
