Random question about taxis: is it reasonable to assume that you can quickly get a taxi in NYC really early in the morning, lets say around 6 AM? If not, is there a way to arrange for a taxi to pick you up from a certain location at the same time every day?

totally depends on where you
totally depends on where you live ... i took a taxi from midtown to work in the financial district almost every day last summer since the express trains didn't run early enough in the morning. i almost never had a hard time finidng one. however, there were several groups of full time guys that lived on the UES that had arrangements with taxis to pick them up every morning at a specific time. it's definitely not unheard of. sometimes gypsy cabs will also enter into similar arrangements.
buddy told me something like
buddy told me something like $200/mo to get picked up every morning by the same cab
Re:
Do you know any more about these arrangements? Like were they made with the taxi company or the drivers themselves, and how reliable are they?
As for area, let's say Murray Hill/Grammercy, around there
taxi?
Wtf? Why? Take the subway like a real new yorker.

uhm because when you have to be at work at 5:30 or 6:00 AM and either the express trains aren't running yet, or they are running incredibly infrequently, it can take you up to 45 mins to an hour to get to work...if you enjoy waking up at 4:00 AM that's great for you, but god knows i don't...
as for the OP's ? - the arrangements are almost definitely made with the drivers themselves. since it's pretty common i assume they are fairly reliable- i'd try someone out for a few days and then maybe give him a two week advance so he has an incentive to continue with the arrangement and that way, worst case scenario, if he splits with your money you're only down like 40 bucks and while unfortunate, it's not the end of the world...?
???
What the hell IBD group are you working for where you consistently need to be at work at 6 am?
Re:
Thanks guys, that's definitely helpful. Anyone else have experiences to share?

I've taken a cab almost
I've taken a cab almost every morning around 7AM. My apartment is midblock on a street so I'll usually walk to the avenue to catch a cab and I will usually wait one light change at most. 70% of the time though, a cab will pull onto my street before I even get to the avenue.
If you're not in some random location and you're looking to leave before 730AM, you should be fine. Last summer when I didn't have to get in until 9PM, it was much much tougher and the traffic is horrendous so you are much better of taking the subway esp with the number of trains running (typically never waited more than 5 min. for E train around 830AM)
i'd always take the subway
i'd always take the subway to work in the morning unless i were running late. cab fares add up very quickly. my subway line was within a couple blocks of my apartment and taking a cab to midtown would have run me $15-20, so it never made sense to take a cab unless i was just looking to give money away.
