Income Statement Financial Research

Hi all,

This semester I'm taking a class that allows me to pick a topic and quantitatively analyze it using software like Stata. I've decided to research the relationship between monetary policy and banks' interest and trading earnings.

I'm currently in the data collection process, and collecting the data for the monetary policy side has been simple, but getting data for banks earnings over time has been extremely laborious.

My current method has been to look up the company, say JPMorgan Chase, on sec.gov and painstakingly grab their quarterly data and put it in an excel sheet. I'm asking the community if anyone knows of a resource that consolidates financial statements over time and makes it easy to work with. I know there are data resources out there that require a subscription, but I'd like to avoid these since I don't have a lot of money as a student.

I appreciate your help!

It does not. Closest comp to EDGAR is its ugly Canadian cousin, Sedar. Certain international exchanges will post filings for their listed companies, but there are so many different exchanges that it's not a very effective way to look. Easiest way is to go straight to the company's website. If they are public, they will have a filings section. Or if you have Factset, capiq, Thomson or Bloomberg, just check the links for where they're sourcing the data for the company's financials.

Try CapitalIQ or FactSet, but they are also subscription-based. Not sure if they would have foreign firm financials though. You always have to be careful when pulling from databases though, as you need to understand the settings they use (e.g., are you using the most recent financials or original financials).
