Investment Banking with Programming skill?

http://www.payscale.com/research/IN/Job=Associate_-_Investment_Banking/…

Just came across this link which says "A skill in Java/J2EE is associated with high pay for this job". Is the coding skill preferred because of modeling/VBA? I'm a new bee in IB

You will need a hardcore programming language like Excel, which runs very close to the metal. Also, it's good to have some knowledge of assembly languages like PowerPoint and Word, because you will be assembling a lot of documents. You should also be aware of object oriented programming, as you will often be manipulating objects in PP and Word, and you want to make sure they are lining up properly.

Good luck.

Excel, Word, Power Point that I know properly. What about C/C++,Java, Matlab, linux?

Don't need any of that. You will do 0 programming. No linux either, you're not going to be writing/compiling code, and you will not be a network administrator. Know Excel and the rest of MS Office suite.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

Are you kidding? Most of the people in my S&T class didn't even know how to program. In IBD or AM, the most you'll need to use is VBA, which is very easy to learn. Most people can pick it up on the job without any prior exposure.

I saw a M&A arbitrage and long/short strategy jobs which required programming skills. everything is becoming automated, not particularly banking but if you want to go into a hedge fund after 2yrs, you just might need it. Plus, its always a good skill to have, because you could market yourself to many other strategies.

On the trading side, it's not going to be about C++/Java in five-ten years. It's going to be about fast execution and broad data-handling capabilities. And that ultimately boils down more to a detailed knowledge of algorithms, numerical methods, machine learning, and data structures. We're already doing a lot of that in equities.

Learn one imperative language, but then focus on the 300-400 level theory and algorithms classes. These classes would be best taken at a strong engineering school like MIT, Berkeley, or Stonybrook.

If you want to be a trader in ten years, get a CS or CE degree and dabble in finance/math, rather than the other way around.
