CRE Underwriting

I'm a new college grad that recently received an offer to join the CRE division at a BB bank in NYC. They are one of the bigger commercial lenders out there. I would be starting as an Analyst in the underwriting group working on both CMBS and Balance Sheet transactions (transaction sizes are usually in the tens of $millions). The base salary is competitive with IB, in fact it is more than what many of my friends are making working for MM IBs as first-year analysts in NYC.

While the pay is attractive, I am wondering if this is a good place to start. I have always been highly interested in real estate but I am not totally clear on the exit opps or the upside of staying within this part of the business. My eventual goal would be to transition over to REPE or a REIT. For these purposes, I have heard mixed things about starting out in underwriting and would like to know what you guys think.

Thanks

p.s. I have searched this forum extensively and have been unable to find any helpful topics on RE underwriting.
