CS- Private Fund Group

Private Funds Group:
Raises capital for domestic and international direct investment firms (or General partners), including firms such as Onex, Kelso, Bear Stearns Merchant Banking and Clayton, Dublier & Rice. Our clients include leveraged buyout, hedge, distressed securities, venture capital and emerging markets funds. We raise capital from investors (or limited partners) worldwide, including public and private pension funds, endowments, foundations, commercial banks, insurance companies and high net worth individuals. Our Private Fund Group is the world's leading placement agent in raising private investment capital. We have professionals located in New York, Chicago, Dallas, London, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Does any one know anything about this group? They raise money for PE funds- I would like to know what skills one would learn in a place like this, the exit opportunities to PE esp and what the job involves.

Thanks!

Placement agents are essentially salesman raising capital for first time funds. At the analyst level you put together private placement memorandums and other presentations to send out to LPs. PPMs are about 80-100 pages and very dull to read, I could only imagine putting one together would suck the life out of me. The hours are better than traditional ibanking, from what I have been told they tend to average 80 hours a week. The bad thing is that compared to traditional ibanking you do not get as strong of a skill set. There is not much modeling experience. The skill set you learn is essentially making a presentation for the senior people to take on the road. The exit ops are worse than regular ibanking and in general are to mba programs or to other placement groups at a rival bank.

Hi, I also might have the option to join FT. I already know that Banking is better in terms of money and exit but I know that I most likely could not pull the 2-3 years off.

My question now: Would that Private fund gig be ok for 2-3 years than B school? What could come afterwards? I dont want to be fundraising all my life.

thanks

it sounds like the fund raising group.  i know they are recruiting for that for summers alot of places and that is the title under which they are posting the internship.  know why u r interested in real estate (hint: other jobs u r applying for should be in real estate or at least tell them that).  be aware that a growing competitor in their space is BX private placement and it is composed of many ex-CS guys so if u say u r interviewing there they may ask with whom.  know why you would be good in an advisory role.  understand cap rates and ways you would value a piece of real estate.  the job is alot of marketing and not a lot of analysis.  not ur typcial "IB," really not IB at all but they may refer to themselves as bankers anyway...and try not to look as shocked as i did when they say it.  there is no corp fin in this - more examining fee structures, returns/projected returns on investments, and more writing than u think - in fact they are likely to ask for a writing sample if u r progressed to 2nd rounds.
