Cultural fit vs. Pedigree/Rockstar Quality

So you're choosing between two candidates or maybe even a pair to proceed with offers. One has mediocre grades, did well on behaviorals and conveyed enthusiasm for the opportunity. i.e., sounded likable? This person missed one or maybe two techinicals the interviewer was looking for. As opposed to the other candidate that looks good on paper, has a slightly better GPA, and answered almost all the technical questions to the teeth. They both hit the points down (sounded like they knew their stuff), but one is more polished than the other on the "hard technicals". What you guys think? Who was more prepared?

I'd take the technicals candidate. You know she's solid and can do the basics. That's what you want in a grunt whose name you won't ever remember*.

  • I cannot remember most of the names of the analysts I work with. They're all largely interchangeable until they fuck up.
Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.
