Current ThinkPad lineup
What are your guys' thoughts on the current ThinkPad lineup? Thinking of getting a T450 after selling my Macbook Pro, can't do anything productive in Excel on it. If you guys have any other PC suggestions, I'd appreciate that too.
I just got the T450s and love it. 14inch screen is perfect size for me, compact/ightweight enough to carry around easily, yet not too small that I feel like I am watching a movie on a smartphone/tablet. The build of the thinkpad is also great, with a very nice keyboard and solid construction.
I loaded mine up with memory, processor, etc, so I don't know how the lesser versions run, but it is pretty quick and has been able to handle everything i've thrown at it so far.
Only negative I can come up with so far is the screen isn;t as bright as some (has more of the matte/anti-glare finish on it) although there may be an option that isnt this way, not sure
Thanks for the response. I saw that the 450s had a limit on how much memory you could add since the 4gb ram was soldered. Did you work around this somehow? Also, what other upgrades did you do if you don't mind me asking?
Thinking of a W550S for myself here soon. I like the number pad being included.
I also just recently pulled the trigger on a T450. I'm very happy with it so far.
consider waiting until the next OS is released. Windows 8 sucks.
Thinkpad x1 Carbon or T450s are great choices.
I went with the I7 processor, 12GB RAM (which unfortunately will be the max it can handle) ,500GB 7200 RPM primary harddrive, 16GB SSD secondary, mid-level screen (forget what the options were).. that sums up the keys.
As others mentioned, there is no keypad, which is a negative for me, but I didn't want to go with a 15+ inch screen, I like the portability of the T450s
EDIT: forgot to mention windows 7 downgrade rights.. plus pretty sure windows is offering free upgrades when 10 comes out, so wouldn't worry about that
You could just partition your macbook or run excel in boot camp.
Aren't all the keys still different though?
If you run windows Excel they are the correct shortcuts.
My X1 Carbon came in the mail yesterday. I'm still in college but use Excel regularly for my research job and I can say with full confidence that the keyboard is amazing. It's extremely light, durable, and has a very sleek look. I bought it with 8GB ram and Windows 7 downgrade rights. Very happy I didn't go for a MacBook.
thanks for the input guys
So, T450 and X1 for considerations. Duly noted.
I use the Thinkpad x1 Carbon, can also say that it is great. Although there is one setback. On my version, the F1, F2, etc. keys are on this touchscreen pad, which is really inconvenient for checking formulas in excel.
Will note that some of my coworkers were given X1 Carbons for work and there have been issues with the screen breaking. Something to do with the way the hinges/casing is built.. they are super light, but in my opinion, the slightly lower price tag with added flexibility for upgrade options and more standard ports made my decision for me. I still find the weight/portability of mine to be perfectly fine.
If you buy the T450 w/ Windows 8, you get a free upgrade to Windows 10 later this year.
I just got my T450s a few weeks ago and it's pretty amazing. I bought the base model with 4 gb ram and 256 gb hard drive, then added a 8 gb ram chip and swapped the hard drive for a 500 gb ssd (solid state drive). The upgrades make a pretty significant difference imo. The laptop boots up so much faster (several seconds). Very solid build, lightweight, portable, and the keyboard is pretty damn awesome. I highly recommend the T450s.
For the record, I knew nothing about computers but upgraded the ram and hard drive after reading some stuff on google for a few minutes. Much easier than I expected.
The current generation Thinkpad X1 Carbon is the best PC computer ever made
Expensive, but the best
Get the non touchscreen version with the high resolution IPS screen
Any particular reason? I'm in the market and was considering a W550S
I beg to differ. The T450s can be had for less and is an equivalent/better machine. You pay up for the difference in size/weight for the X1 carbon:
X1: 13.0 x 8.9 x .7 in. ~2.87lbs T450s: 13.03"x 8.90"x 0.83" ~3.5lbs
Not saying it isn't a great computer, just want to give a full view of the options rather than blindly leading people to the X1 because of less than a pound and less than a quarter inch in thickness.. Everyone has their preferences between power/portability/screen size/etc, so it depends what you want, but you can get a T450s for less with an equivalent processor, harddrive, more RAM, swappable battery (option to go up to 6cell, along with built in 3cell) and additional ports (DVI, USB, etc.) that are not options on the X1.
CRE.. haven't used the W550s but I imagine it is similar just a bigger screen, number keypad and even more ability to upgrade (not maxed out at 12GB ram, etc.) as they have a bigger casing to work everything into.
The W series are workstations and aren't really for portable work at conferences, on a plane, etc.
The T series laptops are fantastic, don't get me wrong. I had a T42P, a T410s, and a T420s. They are great computers.
T450s: Display maxes out at 1920x1080 IPS X1C: Display maxes at at 2560x1440 IPS. It is glorious
The Onelink dock on the X1C is a simple cable vs. the large platform dock for the T450s
X1C is 20% lighter and 15% thinner (which makes a difference if you travel a lot) and subjectively much more attractive with its tapered base
IMO the only real reason to buy a T450s is if you need the ports, the swapability, or if the X1C is too pricey
Y'all aren't much slower using the non-keypad number keys? It's a world of difference for me, but perhaps it just comes down to practice.
The new version reverts back to normal keys. The switch to the adaptive keyboard thing nearly caused a customer revolt.
No no I meant everyone here buying/using a x1 or T450S as opposed to the W550S. Not having a keypad (ie not going with the W series) would slow me down tremendously.
Yes that touch screen for the F keys was incredibly annoying. Glad to hear that they went away from that.
Also something that annoyed me on my friend's (newer version) vs. mine (original i think?) is that they put the backspace and delete keys right next to each other so I always accidentally deleted instead of backspacing. Do you know if they changed that back as well?
Has anyone looked at the x250? Thinking about picking one up in the next couple of months since battery life is supposed to be very good.
Have not seen one in person. Looked into, but didnt get far as I decided the 12.5" screen was smaller than I wanted to go. Let us know if you get one, curious to see how it is...
One of the features on the T450s/W550s is the dual battery. Rather than one single battery (6 or 9 cell) they have 1 internal 3-cell and another interchangeable one (W550s is a 6 cell, T450s is a 3), so you can swap batteries without powering down. Lenovo has a 6-cell available for the T450s to get you up to 9 total for extended battery life.. don't have one yet but i'll be grabbing one of those before my next long trip for sure.
Anybody have thoughts about the XPS 13?
I haven't liked any ThinkPad's I've used, including the X1/Carbon. Got a surface pro 3 a few months ago and am very happy (it's almost the size of an actual page so you can read PDFs on it without squinting).
New Thinkpad- T410 or 510 (Originally Posted: 07/23/2010)
Hmm so I'm upgrading my laptop and cannot decide between a T410 and T510... do you guys think that the 15.6" screen on the T510 might be a bit bulky to haul around...
The specs will be more or less the same on both machines soo it's down to the screen size really..
I'll be taking this around a lot.
Suggestions?
15.6" is big...I'd got with 14.1" and get an external monitor and a dock for home use. Best of both worlds - thin and light for the road, dual monitors at home.
I got the 15.6" and never want to take it anywhere. Go for the smaller one. I am waiting for the netbooks to get more powerful before I buy another laptop.
Ya I decided to go for the T410. Thanks guys.
