Deal Discussion Forum

Chaps,

In an attempted to bring something useful back for experienced users, would there be support for a deal focused forum? Whether it be the Elliott Argentina fiasco (someone is doing a great update etc. thread of this), the latest M&A (yawn), so and so adviser getting booted off the mandate, or an interesting new debt / capital raising product / deal. Could even chuck in investment ideas, but i think that sphere is rather saturated online.

Ya know, try to mature this up a little, while still maintaining a gossipy banter aspect to it.

Yup? Nope?

Definitely for this idea.

I was thinking myself about ways to bring more value for people already in the industry to this site, and I think that this is a great way to do it.

Perhaps it should be a users only forum - force people to sign up and contribute if they'd like to see what the grown-ups are talking about. Purely a random idea, though.

in it 2 win it

Ha I was the one that has been updating the EML vs Argentina saga. I was doing it mostly for my benefits. Glad that someone else has been reading it too. Second the idea of a deal discussion forum, would be a great way to leverage all the resources of WSO's talent base.

Further, it would be a great educational resource to get jnr guys' minds out of X bought Y because it was accretive and into outlining the more political and behind the scenes aspects of deals.

Awesome Idea. Only concern is if there are not enough experienced people to discuss these deals. Any type of discussion regarding deals would be extremely interesting to me and probably helpful for interviews. Just not sure how students will be able to add to the conversation.

honestly, it would be best if they didn't. the minute the conversation starts to get diluted and less experienced, those with experience will shy away and get bored of reading missinfo. whereas if an experienced user can trust that all those discussing are informed (or credible) then they will often be more willing to discuss, debate, correct.

interesting idea, but do you guys think that professionals would actually share more deal info than what is publicly available?

It depends. We can keep it high level without sharing confidential deal info that each is privy to. I think something like what I have been doing with the Argentina-EML thread would be good. Also some of us have been sharing ideas and having this type of discussions via pms. Obviously on a more public forum we will be more discreet. Can always compliment a public thread with private pms anyway.

For me, I imagined it working a little like people updating the goings on of events and also commenting on the rationale behind the moves, while discussing if that's what they think is the best move or if the very premise of the deal is flawed. All this activist investor stuff I'd imagine would work well. Obviously some guy doing some confi'd M&A or debt raising can't come guns blazing saying about the deal he's doing.

I do, however, think it would require effort on the part of all those involved to get critical mass to point where people start contributing / originating post frequently.
