So today I had a two against one (me) interview, and it seemed one person liked me, held steady eye contact, the other didn't. They were both women. When I asked about the further part of the recruitment process, the one who liked me gave details, but the other one, as the interview ended (it was scheduled for an hour and went the whole hour) said "have a nice day and week, we'll be in touch." Does that mean I basically didn't get it? Has anyone ever heard "we'll be in touch" and been invited back for another interview? Or is that the kiss of death? Every interview I've had that has ended in that I've never gotten anything after. But this is an OCR interview.
From experience I can tell you it doesn't mean anything. It's just a pleasantry.

Well does that mean you know people who got called back or got offers after "we'll be in touch?" My search on the internet says that those four words are often described as "kiss of death." I don't want to hold my breath for too long.
What's your problem? Just wait until you here back from them.
I want a job and go to a great school and work hard. Also, these types who play games with prospects are hurting the economy as unemployment is still to high among younger people. Also, whatever happened to kindness, compassion, considerateness, you know, the things that make this world continue to be worthwhile? How would they like it? This isn't like I'm someone without any merit: I have the ingredients and want the respect that I showed them reciprocated.
Listen man, I'm going through the exact same thing as you. I spend lots of time analyzing email responses trying to determine whether some off-handed phrase is a pleasantry or an MD telling me to go fuck myself. But at the end of the day, theres really nothing you can do but wait it out. I wish you all the best.

Special snowflakes are a commodity product.
Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

Get your head out of your ass for a minute. Not giving you any indication is being fair and considerate, because they haven't actually made any decisions yet. It would be much worse if they told you that you were great, only for the next candidate to blow them away and steal your spot. Or if they told you no chance only for all the candidates ahead of you to turn down the offer.

Ohhhh man you are in for a shocker when you start a real job :D
Sorry for bumping old threads - been away from WSO for 3 months and just now catching up on the lulz :(
My search on the internet says that those four words are often described as "kiss of death." I don't want to hold my breath for too long.
When I went through training before I ran interviews to recruit for my team, I clearly must have napped through the "phrases to deploy that mean kiss of death" slides.
Anyone who writes internet pages speculating the inferences behind pleasantries like this has too much time on their hands and little understanding of which they speak.
Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.
These interviewers could not care less how you feel- for better or worse. They don't actively seek to demoralize you, and if you think they even remembered your name 15 minutes later, well, then you've clearly not been rejected enough in life. Relax and keep interviewing. Believe me, I've been there, and it will get better. But only if you stop thinking the world owes you kindness and compassion: it doesn't. If it did, out of my ~98 interviews for FT, I'd be sitting on way more offers.
I thank the last two posters: I honestly think the guidance counselors here should be fired for not saying what they said. If the career department is doing what they are paid my tuition dollars to do, then they must tell me and others the truth.
Ah and also,
You seriously need to revisit your "special snowflake" attitude. Believe me, it's not going to get you anywhere at all, and that's considering you are really a special one, which doesn't seem to be the case to start with.
For the first few interviews I gave, I really had no idea what I was doing and made things up as I went.
I wonder if those I interviewed analyzed every word I said and tried to find some hidden meaning.
Just man up and wait until you hear from them. Ever heard of business being a dog-eat-dog world? Because it for sure is, so I don't think getting sensitive with a short phrase does any justice. Just work on the other interviews that you hopefully got lined up.
This is serious overthinking and just a lack of patience. I do the same but not to the point of judging as interview result from one sentence esp one as simple as that. Every interview has the "we'll be in touch" or "you'll hear from us soon". I'm not sure if this is your first interview, but nothing about that sentence tells us your overall performance on the interview or your background. It's still make or break. They could be calling back or emailing soon with good or bad news.
Its not happening: I've accepted it. Its been over a month, and one of the women who interviewed me was a complete, well she gave every phrase I found on the internet to be kiss of death ( she literally said: "good luck on your week, your day, enjoy the weather," and "we'll be in touch"). And this is not about being special, its about the fact career services at this school will not tell the truth nor did they when I went to see them the day after the interview. All they could give me was "you really can't tell." What, they're scared that I'm gonna do something bad if they tell the truth? Who isn't "special" when seeking a job, in the sense that in this life, they're always someone who in reality is better than you at things? This isn't like I'm lazy or fat, or can't speak English well. But when we have advantages, it is reasonable to expect slack, or considerateness, and my advantage here is I'm an advanced degree candidate who doesn't need sponsorship. I'm in a program surrounding by former engineering and math dynamos, so yes, I expect to be seen as smart and given benefits, especially if a company is recruiting here.
To John Rocker, I know business is dog-eat-dog, but in what fields are getting a job NOT dog-eat-dog?

There is no interviewing codebook that contains a list of kiss of death phrases. Do you understand that?
I interview candidates and, like someone commented above, I make it up as I go along. I certainly don't give any thought to the pleasantries I use at the end of an interview.
And we don't tell the university career services what our decision is. Certainly not the day after, because we usually haven't decided at that stage.
When we do make a decision, we deal directly with the candidates.
You seem to be tying yourself up into knots, selectively listening to people who agree on your secret code words of death interpretation of interviews, ignoring anyone who actually has been/is an interviewer and can give you the inside view ie there are no fucking code words.
The level of angst and self-delusion you've shown in your posts indicates that whoever dinged you has dodged a bullet.
JohnBrohan:
Also, with the jobs in life I have been offered, I've NEVER heard "we'll be in touch." Always got a definite date or probably date.
In all the interviews I've run, I've NEVER give a definite or probable date.

You can't value yourself on such a high pedestal. It's a tough realization but will do you wonders once it happens. You feel prepared, an excellent candidate. They have thousands just like you and me. They were one of those candidates in the past. Sometimes you have to accept that you need to sit back, roll with the punches, and wait... being considerate and part of the Street don't always go hand in hand. If you think they do, get a different job.

This is gold - I am definitely nominating this for a WSO comment of the year or similar award.

You won't fit into IBD with this attitude regardless.
It was a simple pleasantry and not a kiss of death. Sit back and wait until they get back to you as stated.
It means they will be in touch. Focus on the next interview.
To be honest, I don't really think it means anything. Nothing is for sure until you sign the offer letter

Very bad. Generally you never want them to contact you again.
bad...It means rejection. I experienced this personally.

i had "you'll hear from us soon". And everytime i got to the next stage.

I honestly dont believe people say those to be a "kiss of death" just more as a pleasantry to say when someone is walking out
