Deloitte Commercial S&O Business Analyst vs. Capital One Strategy Analyst
Hey guys, I need to make a decision very soon between the two and would appreciate any insight you all could offer. Deloitte's is in their commercial S&O, whereas Capital One's is in their internal strategy group. Capital One Strategy seems to be an elite group within the company whereas Deloitte S&O would offer much greater breadth of industry. I'm hoping to get the most valuable experience out of school, with business school on the horizon. How heavily should I weight Deloitte's program to pay for all of business school? Ability to be promoted and form a solid network? Exit opportunities from each? Really just looking to learn as much as I can right out of school and set myself up well for business school or future careers, possibly not in the consulting space. Thanks!
Your experience, exposure, network, exit ops and preparation for bschool will all be better at Deloitte. Work life balance will be better at Capital One. Pay is good at both and shouldn't weight on the decision as much as experience and career positioning should IMO. It's really a lifestyle decision that is ultimately up to you - do you want to travel and be a consultant, or have a desk and a life outside of work? A bit oversimplified but you get it.
Capital One is a sick gig. Great pay, and the best part are the hours. 40 hours max. You could go to happy hour every single day.
I don't know much about the Cap One group but just took a look at the bios of the people in the group - pretty amazing stuff, like 80% Harvard/Yale with some Brown and Princeton sprinkled in. It's a more unique gig than Deloitte S&O but you obviously won't get the diversity of client experiences. These groups tend to place well in b-school but, even better, you can probably stick through it for a few years then get placed in a great position within Cap One - in fact, usually these internal strategy groups are not about moving up within the group but about grooming the young talent for leadership elsewhere in the company - you can see this is the case with this group because nearly everyone is fresh out of UG or b-school so people aren't sticking around. Finally, the thing about internal strategy is you'll be 100% focused on client strategy and improving your firm so you will deal far less with things like managing clients/writing proposals/selling/managing projects/managing budgets etc. which are all things you'd do in consulting.... some people like this stuff and some don't. Another caveat is you'll need to make sure consumer finance is something you're interested in. Also, you'll have to live in either Boston or McLean, VA (right outside DC) so make sure you're ok with that.
