Deloitte Consulting BTA TS&A vs. Deloitte Digital

Hello,

I will be starting as a BTA at Deloitte Consulting upon graduation and will be working in the TS&A (Technology Strategy & Architecture) service line. I'm extremely excited to be starting at Deloitte and specifically in TS&A, but I was wondering what people's perspectives were of the service line. It seems that a lot of the work in TS&A has collaboration with S&O and the projects can range from M&A to IT Strategy. I'm definitely interested in the strategy side of technology and am looking forward to working on a variety of projects. Do you find that the projects in TS&A are mainly strategy or are a large amount of the projects focused on implementation?

Second, I'm also extremely interested in Deloitte Digital and specifically the Digital Business & Strategy service line and was wondering what people's thought were about DD and the service line. Digital seems to be one of the highest growing practices within Deloitte and the projects seem to be really exciting to work on.

Finally, I was wondering what people's thoughts were in terms of which service line would be "more ideal" to start in and what the differences would be in terms of the careers that people go into after with these service lines in tech companies.

Thank you very much!

Both are great service lines, but Deloitte Digital's DB&S service line is increasingly focusing more on pure strategy. Have increasingly seen teams being staffed up with Monitor and DB&S. Growth targets are very ambitious but achievable for the next 3-5 years. But DB&S is still new / emerging, so take this with a grain of salt.

You can't go wrong with TS&A though. It is a great starting point and it should allow you to see different areas of consulting with relative ease. Have several good friends in TS&A and they generally don't have issues getting staffed on interesting projects. Only caveat would be that TS&A can get somewhat technical on their more IT infrastructure focused projects. DB&S largely stays out of this realm.

Thoughts above are based on having multiple friends (including Principals) in each of these service lines.

Good luck! Feel free to PM if you have any additional questions.

Thank you very much for your input! I really appreciate your perspective on both service lines and I think that they're both extremely interesting based on what you mentioned.

Because DD is the growth area of Deloitte, from the long-term perspective (2-4 years), would you say starting in DD as my main service line would be better over TS&A? Another user mentioned that TS&A has been experiencing layoffs in commercial and that's a bit concerning for a BTA that is just starting. Also, in terms of exit opportunities, would having knowledge and experience in DD be more flexible than TS&A or would you say it's about the same? How would you say the projects differ in both?

Once again, thank you for your help! I will definitely PM you with additional questions if I have any.

I'd like to offer some insights (i'm part of Deloitte Digital). Digital Business & Strategy focuses on tech based transformation of organizations across different verticals, some overlap with S&O work but different types of projects. For example, a Supply Chain Optimization project in S&O would be a ... how do we automate aspects of this Supply Chain and get Mobile/Wearables etc. to connect different logistics teams so we can cut costs by xyz, and then actually do it.

DD is growing and I think its a stronger brand and service line within DD (we haven't had layoffs) whereas TS&A has had layoffs (quite a few in commercial).

DD is also involved in everything from Digital Sales & Service, CRM, Blockchain, Analytics, Mobile, Artificial Intelligence, and has a strong list of clients. I'd choose the growth area (Deloitte Digital) over TS&A (nothing unique about TS&A and doesn't really stand out).

DD is part of Deloitte Consulting's Technology Consulting service line, so they recruit wherever TC recruits, then once the BTAs are hired, they would identify which Service Line to place the BTA in (taking into account their major, any prior experience whether full time or internships), and partially the preference of said BTA.

Thank you very much for your input! This is extremely helpful to know and I will definitely keep this in mind prior to starting, as I may consider requesting a change in service line to DD and specifically DB&S. I'm really interested in all of the groups within DD and because it's the growth area of Deloitte, it may be a better option to consider in the long-term as opposed to a non-growing practice.

Why is it that you think TS&A has been having layoffs? I would think that companies would still need TS&A for IT strategy and infrastructure. Also, do you find that service lines ever collaborate together on projects (for example TS&A and DD) or is more across groups (like S&O and Tech)? How would the projects differ in TS&A and DD when they both involve IT?

Thank you!
