Denver opportunities?

Anyone got the scoop on opportunities in the Denver/Boulder area? Thinking of making the move out that way (have some family there) and was curious on where I should start looking...

Trying to find something in finance, sell side, buy side, corp dev, etc...

Well, let's see. For corp. finance you've got Dish, Chipotle, Newmont, Ball, DaVita, Liberty Global, United Launch Alliance, Quizno's, Trimble, CenturyLink, MDC Holdings, etc.

Buy side you've got Janus, Marsico, ALPS. Sell side.... I don't know of any. There are some small advisory shops and REPE like FMI Capital and AIMCO.

Lots of big firms have offices here. TIAA-CREF has a big presence and Transamerica just announced they were expanding to a skyscraper downtown. Schwab has a big new campus in the Tech Center; they and Oppenheimer and Brown Brothers Harriman are good for entry level positions. CBRE, Transwestern, and JLL have regional offices for CRE.

I keep an eye on the job boards up here, and it seems like there are plenty of opportunities.

For PE, KSL Capital which is a past spin-off of KKR, Grey Mountain (Boulder), Revelstoke Capital Partners is a Denver PE shop.

IB in the area has been running into trouble. Green Manning & Bunch just went under, FMI has had some people leave, Headwaters MB is still solid.

For Asset Management, you have the Perella Weinberg AM branch, Janus, Marsico (running into trouble lately), Arrowpoint partners, and a ton of small ones as well.

For consulting Deloitte has a pretty big operation in Denver, McKinsey has a lean office there as well.

Mishima covered most of the corp. finance big names. If you're looking to work in a tech/start-up situation Boulder is filled with them.

IB in Denver is as follows, in no particular order: RBC - CME group with ~ 15 bankers Petrie Partners - Headquartered here, one of the top shops in all of the Energy space. Tough Culture D.A. Davidson - Brand new to the city, Energy and Construction groups ~ 5 bankers Headwaters MB - Headquartered out of Denver, but unique structure makes it have offices around US. Solid and expading KPMG corporate finance - recently acquired a top regional MM shop called St. Charles Capital. Looking to make it largest office for the firms US IB business. Growing and covers a wide variety of verticals. JPM - One or two person team here, mostly works with SF coverage but not positive Q Advisors - Solid MM shop in tech space, particular cloud related software companies Green Manning & Bunch - Just closed its doors. Had a mass exodus early in the fall with a lot of people going to places like Piper in MPLS or HL in SF Quadriga Partners - Small (~4-5 bankers) Healthcare focused boutique FMI Capital - Construction focused M&A shop with some cleantech. Consulting firm but is still good in its space

There are some smaller M&A shops here as well but you can google that.

Does anyone have any intel on KPMG CF's foray into Denver? Will the deals being done in that office be the same volume and size as under St. Charles, or are there plans for larger transactions?

CUbocola? Bullet-Tooth Tony? Any inside info?

Which are the real successful sectors in CO? Top companies to look at? I am not necessarily asking for well-known names like DaVita but more like those that are "well-kept secrets" ... offer good work/learning and pay well. As an fyi, DaVita does not pay well. If you're a consultant you likely have to take a pay-cut to work at DaVita.

Sectors: oil/gas, telecommunications, healthcare, somewhat of a startup culture (more in Boulder)

Insanely jealous, enjoy Denver. It's an amazing place.

There is just as much startup activity in Denver as Boulder now. There is a lot going on in tech at the moment.

Botany, botanical sciences and all it's "off-shoots".

Although I would say it resembles Dallas in many ways. Telecomm, Oil/Gas(mining), etc.

I moved to Colorado recently and would like to get the WSO community's help in understanding the business landscape in Colorado. I am a senior consultant with an MBB firm but don't know much about CO, moved here for family reasons.

One additional comment on this - I'm not sure that in general you can expect to make more in industry than in consulting or banking.

DaVita is by far the largest recruiter of people with blue chip backgrounds and top MBAs right now. Many of the big corporates in CO are interesting but don't necessarily pay top dollar...companies like Vail, Newmont, Dish, Liberty Media, etc. I know ex-BB/MBB types at each of those companies.

The one exception that I see is going into an oil & gas company as an acquisitions/corp dev type person. I know a couple of people that do this, but they previously worked in O&G i-banking. I believe you'd need a deep knowledge of the sector to land one of these roles and most of the smaller companies only have a couple of dedicated people. It's a pretty sweet gig, if you can get it - good comp and reasonable hours.
