Difference between lying and exaggerating
Hi guys,
I have a question about what I can and can't say about an internship I did last summer at a midsized fintech firm. I was in an ops role within a division that includes the algo trading desk, and my manager agreed to let me spend a lot of time on the algo desk to learn from the traders and see more of the client-facing side of the business. Now I am applying to sophomore internships, mostly BB PWM and boutique IB roles, and naturally, I included a bullet point about my time on the algo desk observing/learning from the traders. Just to reiterate, the division/experience listed on my resume is all 100% true. Would it be disingenuous of me to not mention that most of my time was spent on the ops side, and if so, could HR potentially nuke my offer for neglecting to do so?
Just say what you said here - you were hired into an ops role but spent a meaningful amount of time doing xyz and that's what you found to be most interesting and where your work was the most impactful (maybe, not sure if this is true or not). If anything, you can spin it into a positive - you were hired into ops but took the initiative to learn about roles beyond your own and participated in xyz projects.
If you are recruiting for IB and PWM roles, I would note that these roles have minimal to do with algo trading, so I would advise you to tie it all back to whatever role you are interviewing for (maybe talk about client interactions or something).
Appreciate the reply. Like you mentioned, algo trading has basically nothing in common with IB. Do you think an interviewer would see me as less qualified if I were more forthcoming with the fact that I was hired into an ops role?
