Direct start in Corporate Development after graduating?
Hey Guys,
I'm currently doing an internship in the Corporate Development (M&A) of a big tech company. I already did internships at BB in M&A before and I'm about to graduate from university with a MSc in Finance.
My plan was to start after college at an M&A boutique and exit after 2-3 years to Corporate Development. Now the company where I'm doing the intership at the moment offered me to directly begin there.
Would you recommend this or do I have bad chances to switch the company some time if I was not in investment banking before.
Thanks for your advice!
What is your long term goal? If CD, why not stay? I think your skills will be transferable within the same industry. So if its a tech company, you'd have a good chance transitioning to the CD department of another tech company.
By the way, congratulations on the offer.
Thanks. My long term goal at the moment is CD. I'm just afraid that I would bind myself too much and lose a bit flexibility to change to another industry or also to go to PE or a HF later. I think with 2-3 years of M&A experience in the CV I would keep that flexibility.
I really don't know what to do..
Working tech CD will allow you to change to a good deal of industries pretty easily, and obviously provides good exit opps to other tech firms. If you were at a chemical company but wanted to get into tech, then I'd probably counsel go IBD.
I've worked in healthcare tech corp dev for a while and can honestly say @"wingtips" is correct in that it's easy to move to different companies. I've had hiring inquiries from plastics, fintech, consulting, advertising, etc...
Industry isn't really an issue, it's the skills you gain. But skills you can gain in technology doing corp dev can take you a long way.
