Do I take the internship? Looking for advice.

Sophomore in undergrad @ college in the NYC area, I was offered an internship at a RE Development company. They are flexible and will allow either Spring or Summer position (both even), they want around 15 hours a week.

My question is this, I want to do this internship for the Spring and find another for the summer (thinking about research division @ a brokerage house). My folks think I can't manage school and the internship during the Spring semester but I think I can manage it (no classes after 11am Mon-Fri).

Thank you

Haha not a chance they need your parents consent. Why are they so against it? 15 hrs should be easily manageable even with a full class schedule. If not, then you really need to work on your time management skills if you want to have a successful career (so this will be good for you regardless). you can easily do 3 days a week for 5-6 hours in the office 12-5ish,which will give yoy some solid talking points for your resume, hopefully develop a few connections with coworkers and pick up few real world job skills while you're at it. I would sell this to your parents, and if not, do it anyway

EDIT: Want to add, try to keep your grades up. Like I said above, should be easily doable working 15hrs a week, but don't let your GPA suffer. Not a good look for future job opps, not to mention proving your parents were indeed correct

Yes. That was a classic.

If this stuff is indicative of how this upcoming generation thinks and acts, then there is definitely hope for people who aren't pussies.

I get where your parents are coming from. They're paying $40k+year for you to get an education and don't want you hurting your academics by spending time on a job. That being said, you need to do both. Your grades are important, but there are a lot of good candidates with good grades. Your experience is what is going to set you apart during recruiting and having nothing but a high school job waiting tables in the "experience" section on your resume is not going to look good.

Who gives a fuck what they think. You're a big kid now. When I was a sophomore in college (mind you this wasn't long ago at all.... maybe a year and a half at most) I got a gig in CRE brokerage and went to school full time. My folks thought I wouldn't be able to handle the load until I came home with my first commission check and a huge smile on my face.

If you're genuinely interested in the internship I'd take it no questions asked. You're still young and this is the time to do it.

I had a flair for languages. But I soon discovered that what talks best is dollars, dinars, drachmas, rubles, rupees and pounds fucking sterling.
