Cold call emailing is such a bullshit concept. The whole purpose of networking is to determine if you can sit next to someone for 12 hours. Cold call emailing is equivalent to asking out a girl to a date through gmail.

What exactly do you mean by cold call emailing? If you mean emailing and introducing yourself, then asking for a couple minutes for an informational interview over the phone, then I think it's a pretty solid way to begin the process of reaching out.

To answer OP's question, there may be a variety of reasons why you aren't getting responses from any given firm. Try following up once, a week or two later, and if nothing, then just move on. There's plenty of people who WILL respond.

I agree it can be a bit awkward, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

I don't think firms have no networking policies.. I just think they are either A) Busy B) Not willing to help anyone or C) Too insecure to reach and help out someone they don't know.

I've met 2-3 guys through cold emails and once you meet them face to face all is well (as long as you're not an introverted retard)..

In the email make sure you ask for ADVICE and their STORY.. not for a JOB.

Spam filtering?
At larger firms, definitely. The smaller you get, the less attention they pay to this sort of thing, and I get junk mail from time to time...true story.

OP, care to share the unresponsive companies? I'm curious as well because if there's a spam filter preventing cold emails, I will avoid wasting time on this approach when it comes time to network again.

Get busy living

If you keep it to alumni and people who you have any type of connection with, you should get almost 100% replies. The other factor is what you're saying in your email. As someone mentioned above, make sure you focus on the fact that you'd like to hear their story and their experiences in the industry so far. Most people in this industry like to hear themselves talk and don't get to do it as often as they'd like around the office. They will reply, if for no other reason than that.
