Does Visiting Banks Help?

Hey monkeys,

I am contemplating visiting New York for a week, and visiting investment banks to drop off my resume in person. My first question is, would I even be able to leave my resume with a hiring professional? I've heard stories of people doing that and it how it worked for them, but I'm taking it with a grain of salt. My next question is, would it even be worth it? Like, would the banks look at my resume and think 'well, he flew to NY to give us his resume, he must be dedicated?'
My goal is to one day break into PE, and I know you have to go through investment banking (and get an MBA) to do it.
Any advice is appreciated!

You will have a .0001% chance of actually being able to walk up to an investment bank and be able to drop off your resume in person, without having a prior appointment set up. The first thing you have to do is get to the offices of the IB, which means you have to make it past security of the building, who will ask you where you are going and who you are seeing. Saying "IB abc and I want to see the hiring manager" likely isn't going to get you anywhere.

What you will want to do is set up your dates for when you are going to be in NYC. Do it a little bit in the future, but not too far. Then once you have your dates, send off emails to every person you can get contact information for asking for an information interview in person saying that you'll be in NYC from xdate-ydate. This way you can can actually talk to someone, and drop your resume off, and maybe even after some conversation have someone that might even pull for you and say "hey this kid knows his stuff and would be a good candidate"

If you are going as part of "Bank Week" or if you are already going to be in NYC and you have a meeting set-up. That would make sense but definitely don't go out of your way to go to NYC in order to drop off your resume in person. That just sounds crazy and I can't really picture how that is supposed to work.
