Doing a MS but maybe won't graduate

Hi there,

I have already a MS in computer science. Now I am doing a MS in Quantitative finance. Unfortunately, because of personal big personal problems, I think I will not graduate from this MS... I still have some exams but I have so many things to manage besides that I am almost sure I won't do good at these exams.

In the case I actually don't graduate, how would you put it on you resume? Maybe it will sound too pretentious but I think I acquired the same knowledge than my classmates who will graduate and even more, it is just that our exams are done for people who do again and again the same exersises and at the end, you can do very well withtout really understanding the problem... Between people from my class, I am the one who got the best internship (in a US bank for FO Quant position)...

So I think I have the level of people from this MS but I won't get it. Would you specify on your resume that you didn't graduate? Would you just remove it from your CV? Or anything else?

When it will be time to apply for jobs, do you think I can keep this MS on my resume and tell the recruiters once at the interview that I didn't graduate because of personal problems but tell them they can test me on technical stuff to show them that I have a good knowledge? Or will they feel like I tried to hide the truth before the interview?

Thanks.

Not trying to be a jerk, but you absolutely don't have the same education and understanding of your classmates because you are not finishing the degree. I do not know what your personal problems are and I have no doubt they must be pretty severe for you to not finish, but at the end of the day, they have earned the right to put the school and program on their resume and you have not.

I would remove the school and just list graduate level classes on top of your UG.

I will go to the end but it's just I failed for some classes, not all. And it is just because I don't have the time to do many exercises like my classmates. Really, our exams can't show who understood the class and who didn't... When I talk with my mates and asked them questions I had during my interviews for Quant positions in IB, they don't understand the question... They are like robots doing always the same but when it's different and more applied to the market, they get lost.

Anyway, this is not the main question. So you suggest me not to put this year?

For my problems, yes they are and it's anonymous here so I can tell... My family and I lost our home, we lived in a hotel for a while then found a crappy place and now I have so many things in my mind that I can't spend time on my study, I'm working after school to get some money and help my family, my mom is getting sick, I worry more about people around me and we are about to be kicked out again from our house in 3 months... When I hear my classmates saying that they were on vacances in Thailand and now feel demotivated of working, I want to kill them. I know we are not all equal in life, my real friends suggested me to talk with my teachers about this but I don't want to be the poor guy looking for sympathy... Last year, for my MS in computer science, I was on the top of my prom, rank 1st over 150 students... So I am a hard working person but now it's too much for me...

I was thinking also about keeping this MS on my resume but at the time to attach a simple cover letter saying I didn't graduate.

Dude, thats horrible, I am really sorry. I still don't think you should put it on there. Unless you want to tell every recruiter your story at the same time you tell them you didn't graduate you will get dinged repeatedly.

Have you thought about getting work in the area and trying to finish up the degree later? I would speak to the head of the finance department and see if they can do something to help you out.

dude take care of your personal issues then finish the degree properly. ask to take a leave from the program and come back to retake your classes or whatever else you need to do. if you have a MS in comp sci you will have no trouble getting a job right now. "failed out of MFE" will not help on your resume. talk to your program director and prof or you're just an idiot.

Actually, leaving that on your resume would probably constitute fraud.

They will verify your enrollment and graduation before you start work.

It is very easy to do, it is something called the National Student Clearing House.

If you honestly feel that you are brighter than your classmates, then finishing the degree should be a piece of cake because you are the smartest guy in the room.
