Done Madoff with my kids... Help
If this is in the wrong spot Feel free to relocate.
New to the investment world. Former military (the one that gets stuck on boats).
Feeling like i have a very long road ahead of me. Didn't pay much attention in High School due to the fact that it bored me. Passed my classes by acing finals and convincing my teachers to give me a passing grade (D or a C-) seeing as i was competent enough for finals. Needless to say very behind in math (Touch on that in a second)
Joined the military to be a Navy seal. Long and the short of that fractured both Shins and went into regular Navy (fleet). Served 3 years discharged honorably with all benefits.
Ended up having a kid.. but she cheated on me after 3 years and took my child. Think you an trust someone and invest your whole future and then boom... Your fuckin done. SO i went from working to support my whole family as a laborer working 80-100 hours a week, to just having to pay child support.
Going back to school at the age of 25. Community college and hopefully a transfer to NYU, Upenn, UChicago, ETC.. Teaching myself math and learning about the I-Banking world. From there hopefully PE or HedgeFund. Someone in the Family is a major player on wall street with a net worth in the billions.. never met him before though. Thats where I got my interest for the Game.
Not overly savvy with Linkedin and with networking in general. Was wondering if I could reach out to someone to have a mentorship with. Im west Coast currently. Mainly looking for a direction to go and someone to bounce ideas off of.
P.S. I know i can just comb through forums, which i will, but it would just be nice to get to know a few people.
gotta say I admire you service to America and thank you. In terms of this tho, you've got your work cut out for you.
Your advantages: -you served in the military and a lotta firms admire that and are actively trying to recruit vets. It also plays to "team player". -You got a potential connection.
your challenges: -your age. The Street wants guys who are 22, maybe 23 max UNLESS you have an MBA business schools ">M7 MBA where 25-28 works, sometimes 29. Why? They'll give you a bullshit excuse, but in reality, its a cultural thing. They like selectivity for selectivity's sake, that is the young guys "got it right the first time." Nothing else. Obvi they won't directly ask about age, but when they know that 18 is the youngest to serve in the military and add how long you were in, they're close to the answer. -Transfer rate is very low to the target schools you mention. Even then, when they see your resume, for the same reasons in the bullet point above, you're at a disadvantage after they see your CC on your resume. You could, however, take 3 years at the school you get into and say "I graduated in 3 years" and not be technically lying. -Firms like to tout their love of vets, but there still is some worry about PSD, but of course no firm is gonna openly admit that.
http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/ask-me-anything-non-traditional-b… http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/blog/thoughts-from-a-former-navy-seal also look at posts by cphbravo, he's a former military guy
thanks for your service and best of luck
PS: re-read your OP, I'd recommend doing some informational interviewing & combing through the forums so you can get a better handle on what the different parts of finance are before going to your family member. if they're not very close, you have one shot at impressing him/her, so you need to make sure you've done your homework in advance.
@"JohnBrohan" Thanks for taking the time to read my post and supply a detailed answer.
-As far as my age goes I guess nothing i can really do about that. Makes me kind of worry for the long run but this is what I'm committed to achieving. Ill be done with school by the time I'm 29. I guess my best bet would be to nail an internship at a BB to secure a spot and not do anything to age myself while there.
-Im a methodical guy. Ill take your word when you say transfer rate is very low for aforementioned schools. Ill do the best I can while at CC and see what I can get. Going to join some clubs here and try and make an impression.
-Maybe I will leave CC out of the whole mix for my resume and just put the school i graduate from with the year. Not lying just omitting facts unless specifically asked.
-Long and the short working with the hand I dealt myself from being a knucklehead. Thanks again for your response.
