Drank all night, breathalyzed and under limit? Wut?

My firm held a networking event last night and I definitely drank more than 15 craft beers of varying sizes over a period of 4.5 hours. About a week ago I had been drinking and almost crashed driving home, so last night I decided to have a coke light with ice every now and then to not get too drunk (I easily get carried away).

I left the event and was not drunk, but definitely not sober. I got stopped by the cops and they breathalyzed me. I was very scared because I live in South Africa and you do NOT want to spend a night in jail here ! At first I tried to stupidly trick the machine by blowing a small stream of air, but the cop just said 'Um, that didn't work', and shoved it closer to my mouth. I figured I'm screwed anyway so blew a thin stream of air a lot harder, and to my surprise he said 'Thank you sir, have a good evening'. I was very happy but very confused. This morning I told my boss and he said 'How the fuck did you pass the alcohol test!?', having seen me drink all night.

Has this ever happened to you? Could the coke light have helped? Maybe the cop felt sorry for me? I'm not a 15 year old girl so I know the beer was alcoholic. Maybe I did this but don't remember?

Not sure what the penalty is in S. Africa but I did the math and if a DUI cost me $10k (not counting opportunity cost), then it would take ~5 years of cabs to hit that number. And that's $20 each way, Friday and Saturday night every single weekend for 5 years straight.

USE A CAB.

What about putting other people's lives in danger? I'm sure you considered that in your analysis, but I'll assume you just forgot. :)

The fact that you almost died last week due to drunk driving, and then proceeded to do it again leads me to believe you may actually be missing a chromosome.

A Y one maybe?

I have very few hard and fast rules in life but one of them is don't drink and drive. Really fucking stupid thing to do. Especially in a developing country where you could end up in some really fucked up prison where the guard will kill you because you ran over one of their family members. Cabs or Uber will cost far less than a DUI.

Other rules are don't get discount Lasik or cheap sushi.
