Duke v Nova
Hello,
I'm in at both Duke and Villanova, and I'm having a tough time deciding. My background is a BS in bio with A minor in business, from a non-target school, I'm interested in ib, particularly healthcare/life sciences. Which one is more likely to get me to where I want to be?
I'm also entering a msf/mms program next year, so you can take this with a grain of salt. But I had to make this choice, with a couple other options too. I think it depends on your experience. Duke is going to give you the opportunity to have OCR for most banks, and a big network. If you think you can be competitive to get selected for interviews at Duke, then I think it's a good choice.
Nova also sounds great though, particularly the curriculum. I guess my thoughts on Villanova are that you'll have a good shot at MM banks in NYC/Philly. Maybe less flexibility in terms of geography than duke. Given you're bio background, I might say go nova because adding the strong finance curriculum could make you look pretty good for the sector you want
Congrats, good options
i hoped this was something about sc2 :( i sad.
The way I saw it when applying to MSF/MMS programs was about what I actually want to learn. From all the posts I've read both schools will give you OCR and a network to work with. It does seem that Nova is much more Finance focused than Duke. Duke is management with an emphasis on Finance while Nova looks to be straight finance.
I have confidence in my "management" or soft skills and think my Finance could use a primer so I chose Nova. If you feel that you want a mix of both then Duke sounds like it might be better.
Please go to Duke. Villanova is a great school, but it lacks the prestige that Duke offers. Being a target rather then a non-target can offer huge advantages (network, interviews, etc.). Duke also has great programs all around including science. The business/finance curriculum is moot when the candidate is a science major so the strength of the business program should not scare you away (Note: if you really care, one can learn all of the finance needed for Wall St. right here: http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~adamodar/ for free). Good luck
In summary this should say it all: Villanova is known for being a pretty good business school. Duke is known as the Ivy of south.
I'll try and not weigh in too much since I am obviously slightly biased, but something to remember is that while Duke has the better name, you are also competing against Duke UG's who have been utilizing that great network since day one. Plus you have Duke MBA's right above you. Also, no where to intern during the year.
What Nova lacks in name it makes up in network, the fact that you would be in the dominant FO finance graduate program and only really compete against a small group of tip top Nova UG's.
A friend of mine in the program has been on 20 trading floors because of Nova alumni and just got off the phone with GS because of an alumni. Villanova's network should not be discounted.
PS - I enjoy the discussions here. Keep them up.
