Duke MMS (Masters in Management Sciences)?

Has anyone heard any review of the program? I kind of would prefer this program over an MBA at the moment. I know it is not good to into an MBA program without years of work experience, but I am on scholarship for this program if I do get in. Not to mention, I assume that Duke carries a reputation of excellence in business education (assumption).

I appreciate it guys!

I attended the MMS program as well and here is my input.

I came into the program with some work experience and a business undergrad. Despite this, I learned a lot from the classes due to its case-based nature. I absolutely loved my experience at Duke as the combination of networking, education, and social activities were all top notch. The classes were really similar to the core classes in a MBA program - we would often have the same corusepacks and lesson plans.

However with that being said, why are you looking to go for a masters degree? If you can find a good job right out of undergrad, I would recommend doing that and applying to a top full time MBA later on. You would typically apply for the same entry level positions as a top undergrad through the program. This is the case for 90% of the 1 year MMS/MSF type programs. For some (including myself), this was a non-issue as I wanted a fresh restart with stronger recruiting and networking opportunities. However, don't attend thinking that the master's degree will give you a huge salary bump.

As for stats, their website has a class profile that is very representative of the entire class. If you are international, you may need slighlty higher grades and GMAT/GRE scores. Admissions places a big emphasis on fit as well, so its not just grades.

Thanks for your input! To answer your questions:

At the moment the career I am in doesn't seem very progressive. I was able to land summer internships, but my current employment doesn't really field any kind of promotion, growth, etc.. Also, when you mention that it puts you in line for top undergrad programs: the school I go to is a non-target. I strongly believe that a target like Duke may help my chances for employment. As a result, I was also nervous that my GPA would be even worth less to apply to the program.

Do you have any recommendations based on any surprises you didn't expect during the interview, applicant process, etc.?

Also I am planning on applying for Round 2 of admission so that my GPA will move up by 0.2 (grade change)? Should I miss the first round for this or is it not a big difference from 3.1/3.3?

Are you still in undergrad? Try your best now to network and apply to jobs WHILE also applying to some masters programs. This way you can play your entire field...you never know if you somehow luck out into a great job even from a non-target. This is especially the case since next year's application is not even up yet, so you have some time on your hands.

If you have concerns about your GPA, send an email to admissions. It shows interest early on and they were very open to those type of questions when I applied. Having a high GMAT can easily offset the lower GPA and I know some people in the class (although in the minority) had a low 3 GPA. However, admissions will generally give you some advice on when to apply given your situation.

Yeah I'm still in my undergrad. I was afraid of just asking admissions, as they will have a preset notion that my GPA is poor. I did get a decent gmat score (700+). Is there anyway you could tell me your stats/credentials with what year you entered the program?

You'll be fine with a 700+ GMAT. Just make sure your essays are good and you do well on the interview. My profile was exactly like the the one they had on the website with a slightly higher GMAT. Also, I highly doubt admission will pre-judge you, they typically look at your final submitted application. I scored low 600s on the GMAT 1st time around and asked them about it early on and I don't think they cared.

  1. You can career shift, I had two IB internships and joined a strategy consulting firm. I went to a non-target and the ability to attract interest and get a great job between Duke and my alma mater were night and day. Even though I didn't think so at the times, the cases we learned have been pretty applicable a number of times. I picked up a lot of nuance from the classes. Having the Duke brand is huge, I picked up a network that's been immensely helpful.

  2. My stats when I applied were around a 3.1, 680, 2 internships one was MM IB and the other in a STEM research position, URM, strong recommendations, STEM major, non-target.

What are you professional goals? How will an MS degree help you get there? Duke will open doors, I completely agree, but in order for us to assist you we meed to learn more about your aspirations. IBD? S&T? MO? BO? Consulting? IMF? Dept of Treasury? You get the point.

The fact that you contemplated getting an MBA from Duke is indicative of your uncertainty. Good luck.

I would love to get an MBA from Duke, I just don't think it's worth applying to without work experience being that I don't come from a top school and my GPA is 3.5. I am uncertain exactly what I'd like to do, I have a strong interest in S&T/HF, but as of right now I'm pretty open.
