Easier Back Office Internships?
I'm trying to break into IBD for next summer. I heard that many people get BO internships at BB for their sophomore summer. Do you exactly get those positions? All the internship openings on BB websites are mostly for IBD/FO. Besides operations and tech, what else does BO include?
Operations is a broad area.
Also, finance and accounting, investment controlling etc.
I'm not sure what you are talking about. All BB's put all of their internship opportunities on their website. Just apply everywhere and something will stick. I've seen plenty of people that do not have special sophomore internships get great offers for junior SA.
Try to get any Investment Banking internship. Having a relevant internship in IB will help tremendously. Try to email boutiques in your region and try to get an off cycle internship even if it's not paid.
If I'm a sophomore this year, when should i start emailing/networking with boutiques for this upcoming summer? I have an Asset Management internship in NYC over my winter break (I know not directly related to IB) and I would like to have that on my resume/under my belt before starting to look around at local boutiques (Philly area) if possible.
Don't do this. It's NEVER to early to start networking. You don't need to be direct about your desire for an internship from the get-go anyways.
Agreed with the above. Try and get transaction experience whether it's a boutique or corpdev. I took the corpdev route and made great connections with several banks along the way fwiw.
These will look better than having some controller internship where you basically did nothing and will help you speak about deals in a more polished manner.
Yeah working at a boutique, corp dev, or other finance job like wealth management will be better than most BO positions.
All BO positions are easy man. Try to get a PE or HF internship instead
Like someone said previously - BO is a very broad area, let alone Ops. BO is any division/group that does not generate revenue and supports the business. (e.g. Ops, Corp controllers, accounting type roles, compliance etc. etc.). Do your best to get an internship in FO, but worse case scenario, don't need to cross out BB Ops where you can use that as a stepping stone to break into a different role.
Hope that helped.
Easy Banks to break into for Back Office Internships (Originally Posted: 03/27/2014)
Hello, I am a sophomore at a semi-target to target (on the lines of UMich, UVA, UCLA) majoring in ECON with a 3.6 GPA. I am interested in working in the back-office for ANY banks may they be small or unknown. I have been searching for over a month and have been applying online, reaching out to recruiters, and etc. But I received no response. I was wondering if there are any ways that I should approach recruiting as my time is little since recruiting season is almost over. Thanks!
