Econ & Phys double major vs Mech Engineering
Hello,
I am a first year non-American ugrad student at Duke, and like everyone else in WSO, I want to enter WallSt. I understand that there already are many threads about suitable majors for careers in WSt and I did go through some of them, but all of those threads are pretty outdated (at least 4-5 years old). So I wanted to ask the people with experience in WSt recruitment, at present, is Engineering the best option to increase one's chances of being hired? I'm more of a theoretical person, so I was thinking I would double major in Physics and Econ instead of engineering. to recruiter's eyes, is that less appealing than an engineering major? also, even for engineering majors, will not minoring or doing a second major in econ/finance reduce their chances of being hired? at Duke, engineering majors need to take 34 classes, which roughly translates to 4.25 classes a semester. so as you can see, even getting a single engineering major requires overloading (i.e if you don't have credits), so getting a minor or a second major seems very tough.
On the side note, but just as importantly, will my status as a foreigner have an impact on my chances of being hired? furthermore, will being of South-Asian (commonly known as Indian) ethnicity have any (negative) impact?
Finally, talking about school prestige, I figured out from previous threads that Duke is considered a second tier target school for WSt. recruitment. has it changed ever since (more importantly, is Duke still considered behind other top schools by recruiters)?
not sure if its relevant, but it's my first post in WSO.
