This poses a very interest concept. Imagine if you worked at one of the international banks, collected account info on all Americans and provided it to the IRS. Doesn't the IRS stipulate that any whistleblowers get a portion of the taxes recouped? This guy literally could have gotten hundreds of millions of dollars in whisteblower incentives.

I feel that money laundering while illegal isn't really the problem. If you can easily launder money the people enforcing the law need to re evaluate their enforcement.

Putting money in offshore accounts isn't money laundering... that's tax evasion.

Money laundering is taking illegal proceeds and making it look legitimate.

Tax evasion through offshore accounts I would say is not as easy as it has been in the past. Mainly because the US Government now has most of these safe haven institutions by the balls. I'd say its pretty enforceable. If you needs tens of millions of dollars just to be able to do it... and then you still risk getting taxed, fined and possibly jailed... that's a fairly high degree of enforceability.

I know what money laundering is, I know what tax evasion is. What I was saying is that if you can have tens of thousands of people doing in a country the size of Germany the problem is the ease of doing this. Sure its not so easy that any old Joe could set it up in an afternoon. But it should be so prohibitively difficult that it would cost more to do than is worth to the person doing it. Besides lowering your tax bill is the most patriotic thing you can do

Interesting view. How do you feel about small business owners? I'd say that 99% (not hyperbole) of the small business owners I've come across cheat on their taxes in a meaningful way. Whether its a restaurant owner not declaring his full profit, paying people under the table etc.. or its a contractor building housing developments and taking a portion of the compensation under the table to avoid taxes... cheating on small business taxes is as easy as it gets with nearly zero detectability/enforceability unless you're absolutely stupid.
