Elitism in Asian Corporate Culture
Hi Guys!
Recently in Singapore, we had this news story of a dating app for the elites come up. It got me thinking about corporate culture in Singapore and Asia in general, and about how bifurcated society can get.
Many of the systems in place here (education especially!) are retained from the "good-old days" of the British - which invariably got the country grandfathered into a system of ranks, hierarchies, streams, classes and whatever else you have. I am not sure how it works in corporate culture and more specifically, finance, in the United States. From what I have seen in Singapore, Hong Kong and even London to a large extent, these roles are still very much etched into society.
Just to give you a small example. When recruiting came about for us, high school pedigree and family pedigree were questioned to a large extent, even by American firms which have a fairly significant "diversity footprint" in the United States.
I am curious to hear from others who have worked in Singapore/Asia on their experiences in corporate culture/finance/banking here, as well as perspectives from Americans on their experiences in Asia.
