Elon Musk in Self-Driving Car Market
After all of the fanfare of the posting on the Hyperloop I wanted to see what everyone thought of Elon Musk declaring he is getting into the Self-Driving car market.
To me, the Hyperloop is a great idea that will be used by 1% of 1% of the world. While the engineering challenges will be daunting, I look at self-driving cars as a greater contribution to society....Does this scare any of you (read Lexus 2010) sitting back and trusting a computer program to get you to your destination?
Absolutely doesn't scare me. People driving cars scares me. Can't happen soon enough.
what eddie said. traffic is the #1 killer of americans abroad, and i'm not surprised. get computers in cars asap
You are going to look back at this thread and laugh. It's like writing: Would you trust your personal finances to a computer? - in the 1970's. Self-driving cars are coming, and much sooner than most people think. Current projections are saying they will be mass market by 2020.
As a CRE guy, I'm wondering if the suburban sprawl will be re-invigorated.
I like driving so I really hope they aren't compulsory or anything.
I think the onset of the autopilot age will also trigger a rise in the popularity of driving for leisure. You'll see things like driving clubs, more designated road tracks, private roads, etc. This will be an optimal arrangement as the people who would go out of their way to drive on a track aren't the outlying threats you might encounter on the open road.
I have no idea what to think of this. On the one hand, the most powerful computers on earth overseen by the most educated humans on earth frequently get off their chain and cause massive damage. On a side note, if there's a huge post QE correction down the line, I'b bet money that it will be triggered by some geek bot in Jersey City. The best software has bugs, and the better the software, the worse the systemic blowout is when it comes to light: you never see it coming.
On the other hand, more people die in car accidents every year than have ever died in terrorist attacks, so I think its safe to assume there's room for improvement. Considering alcohol causes a huge percent of these, it would be nice to be able to party, plop in your vehicle, and press the "home" button. I'm sure everyone would miss being able to hit 120 on the Parkway or wander around untraced, and it doesn't seem feasible to impose a new automatic system all at once, so driving one's self will remain an option for the forseeable future.
But I use public transit lately so I don't even care.
WTF? Have you seen people drive at 130 kph with their iPhone? It's the future.....We used to call it public transport. Forget green cars. We all want a chauffeur driving our car while do other suff...
Carnegie Mellon built one out of a Cadillac. This is coming sooner than we all think:

@ blackhat - I was half shooting for absurdity to underscore things, but I do believe that toilets somehow accomplish that more effectively. And I have no idea how to improve on toilets. Who'da thunk peanut butter was a killer though
Adjustable height...like an office chair.
Actually, that gives me an idea...
Other than Ladders, Peanut Butter is the only other one that's immediately obvious. Bad peanut allergies can really fuck your shit up.
I have not logged in to this site in quite some time and this was my only contribution. As a current Tesla owner I find this very funny and hope it alerts you all to a very old post that aged like milk.
