Emory (Goizueta Business School) 1 yr MBA: needed for HF work?

I'm considering Emory's 1-year MBA since I plan to live in Atlanta after graduating and don't want to leave Atlanta. I won't need an internship. I also hear that Emory tends to be fairly generous in terms of financial aid.

My reason for considering the MBA is that I feel like I am incomplete without it to eventually pursue work at a hedge fund (long/short equity) hopefully in the Southeast.

Could an alumnus or someone else in the know speak on this?

I'd also love to hear from current students/alumni on their experience.

Nah. UVA focuses heavily on cases I believe, similar to Harvard. I prefer a nice mix of cases, lectures, etc. Not a big fan of Texas. Duke doesn't have a 1-year option. At Emory, I could do the MBA in just one year and network in Atlanta with finance professionals.

You're talking about staying in Atlanta so it's probably your best option f that's where you're sure you want to be.

and wont need an internship? so then why are u doingthe mba? where is ur undergrad

I'm only thinking of the MBA to expand the network. I'm only interested in S&T though. I did my undergrad in Atlanta.

Wait, is this right after UG? That would be an awful idea.

No not right after. Why would it be a bad idea? HBS historically has admitted people fresh out of undergrad. I remember years ago when a guy on BusinessWeek got into business school straight out of college. I mean, if you can get it done immediately, why not do that?

OT, sort of,

This point about HBS is that's not true For the class of 2013, they admitted 0 students right out of school, www.hbs.edu/mba/images/site/class13graph.png

Same for the previous class of 2012. They do defer admits, but I don't get the sense that's what you are talking about

I agree shorttheworld, however, remember I am only interested in S&T in Atlanta, not in NY. Also, most guys in S&T don't even possess an MBA. I will be twice as educated as the majority of them. An MD I met with recently went to my undergrad and he doesn't have an MBA or JD.

Before you make this decision... it may be smart for you to do some research on Emory's alumni or even reach out to them. See if many of them actually got to S&T in Atlanta via the school. My guess is, most of them got it out of undergrad and just continued that route.

The concept of "I'm more educated than these other guys out of undergrad therefore I will have a better shot at S&T" is flawed. S&T generally hires out of undergrad, that's just the standard recruiting process. S&T hardly hires out of MBA and if you have one without any relevant exp out of undergrad firms will be hesitant to hire you. They may just assume that an MBA student will be looking for associate level positions - they can't justify it.

Also, no idea why you want to do a 1 year program in your case. Part of the reason people get an MBA is to make a career switch (especially if they don't have prior exp or relevant exp to move from A to B). You'll want a 2 year program so that you can at least get an internship during the summer in where you want to be and then further market yourself with that exp for FT recruiting.

Also, I only considered the MBA as an option to increase the network. I am already in the process of interviewing for S&T roles. I only thought of the MBA secondly as an option to move higher in S&T, similar to moving higher in IBanking. But with some research, I take it that the MBA may not be necessary in this case because once in S&T you stay in S&T.
