Equity Research Bonuses - 2013

I've seen a fair amount of success from this kind of thread before. Just wanted to get a sense where the other researchers are at given how much comp ranges for ER based on your analyst's rank, your firm's sales/trading platform, etc. I'll start:

Bank: Lower tier BB
Position: Associate (1.5 years exp)
Base: 100k (bumped from 80k)
Bonus: 40k

Also some additonal data points I can provide:

At my bank (and id imagine its higher at better BBs esp JPM since they hav fantastic research teams) it seems like you're making 70k+10-20 bonus until you finish all your licenses, at which point you'd be promoted to a full fledged associate. From there I typically see comp starting at around 100k all-in and maxed out at 200k all in as an associate (usually takes 4-5 years). VPs obv make more, but in the beginning your bonus can decline since you're most likely getting your own coverage (branching away from an established franchise) and creating your own bonus pool.

Just some reference: it takes 6months on average to finish all your license exams.

Lets try to add some datapoints from the other side of the normal curve:

Bank: MM Base: 65 (up from 60) Bonus: 0 2nd year Associate, work in quant.

Have been continually promoted since getting a job from internship, feedback on my work is always very positive, I think my employer just doesnt have the budget to pay me anymore than I currently earn.

Out of curiosity, what was your bonus in first year?

hey justkeepgoing, are you at a chartered bank or mid market?I started a few months ago, and have the feeling I was started at way too low - 80 +40 at a MM. Obviously can't do anything about it now, but will give me some ability to renegotiate in fall. Feel wierd asking people on my desk...

Not really on topic, but I just got an offer to start with a $65k base and a $10k bonus coming out of UG at a regional MM

Sounds low compared to the numbers on this thread, but can't complain because hopefully it's doing something that I like while learning a ton about the industry

for a regional MM? Sounds on par. Don't let an anonymous message board skew your view of the world. If you do a good job and enjoy what you do, the money will come.

Thanks! I've actually heard that this firm is famous for underpaying, but they asked about the details of another offer I had and then matched it.. I'm hoping that total comp will go up more than $5k a year going forward though lol

Anybody knows whats the market rate BB pays for fresh grads coming into ER? Heard that some of the BBs has a new pay structure that offers approx 4k/mth to new hires?
