Equity research/investment management from CS
I am currently a undergraduate at a target school majoring in computer science. I have been interested in investing for a very long time and have been passively following the market for several years. I am very mathematically inclined and enjoy primarily computer science and math classes in college. These are very intellectually stimulating for me, while my school's economics classes are not. I took a few economics classes and did not like the way the department was run at all, so I am definitely not considering an economics degree and will probably not take any more classes in the department. My resume, at graduation, will consist of solely tech-related experiences and internships. I would like to get an equity research position, but I fear that recruiters will throw my resume out without a second glance because of my utter lack of professional experience in the industry or related coursework. How can I get interviews and perform well in these interviews? Any help is appreciated.
Also, I know that many of you will suggest IB, S&T, or a quant track, but these are not of any interest to me.
Thanks.
Have you thought about doing something outside of school that shows your interest? Get involved w/ a local CFA chapter (they love students), join/start your school's investment club, write up research reports to show recruiters/contacts, etc.
The local CFA chapter grants membership only to students who are enrolled in graduate finance programs. I am planning on joining my school's investment club this year. Will that be enough experience? Sending research reports to recruiters will probably result in them laughing me off since I have no experience in writing formal reports.
