Etiquette Across The USA

Given that the USA is approximately 3.79 million square miles compared to 3.93 for continental Europe and it is larger than the EU countries, it seems that there would be some major etiquette differences across the country. Have you observed any?

We should add the names of all 700-odd pokemon to a banned usernames list. Respect the memory of blastoise, and the only relevant follow-up troll, mudkipz.

On topic, however: I lived in NYC until I was 20, then transferred to an upstate school. The difference was astounding. You can sum it up as: people in small towns acknowledge you and are actually aware that you're a person, whereas here in NYC you're just a random passerby.

Reminds me of some sappy shit I saw on tumblr: http://www.dictionaryofobscuresorrows.com/post/23536922667/sonder

People in the city seem to have little sense of sonder...

in it 2 win it

The difference between the west coast and the east coast (NE) is pretty extreme. I never really bought into the whole cali surfer persona but after spending a good deal of time in NYC there really is a big difference. As far as dress goes NYC is way more formal than San Fran.

In regards to other forms of etiquette I don't see as much of a difference. Treat your elders/superiors w/ respect etc.

This might actually happen if they build the death star someday.

Interned in the south this summer, from the NE..I have never seen so many doors opened for women in my life.. the whole no fast lane on an escalator is also annoying, and maybe people in the south should learn what the left lane is used for while driving but other than that no major differences..

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

Or maybe you're a cunt who just thinks they have somewhere to be.

No. Stop taking up all the space in the world with your cornbread-fed ass and lifted truck.

First off, this by no means is meant to offend anybody. And if it did, i apologize and i didnt mean it to be that way.

Ive dealt with a number of americans across the socioecogeographic spectrum in a variety of contexts, and as an outsider I can tell you that america isnt the same across the map. And these differences drive the varation in etiquette you're asking about.

Aside from the 1st generation immigrants, who by the way are a weird mixture of their original clutures and america's, the local cultures clearly manifest themselves on the people's habits and behaviors and what is expected and what is not. I noticed that while in the south a man's word may be a binding contract, a binding contract in Illinois may mean nothing. I also noticed that there's a culture of fomality driven by business and weird appreciation for money in New York, whereas people in the west are more laid back and easier to deal with, and that will be clearly visible on the micro-level dealings with the people. After all, what drives people's actions and expectations within a local culture more than the culture itself?

But again, im from a vastly different culture altogether and these are just some random personal observations backed up by zero scholarly sources.

Having grown up near the city and now working in the city, I can definitively say that your average Manhattanite is a douche bag, a narcissist, or worse yet, both.

Having also gone to college in the south, the people there are infinitely more down-to-earth and cordial.

With the notable exception of FL. If your driving in the state and someone wants to take your lane don't try to push your luck, just get out of their way. If you don't the best case scenario is that you will get the middle finger.
